By Ikram Khan | 21 Jul 2019 | BANGALORE

Mr Zavaray S Poonawalla & trainer S Padmanabhan leading Well Connected (David Allan Up), winner of The Kingfisher Ultra Derby Bangalore (Gr.1)

Most pundits in the game said that it is too close to call. The pros in the business were of the opinion that it is a toss up between the champion filly Well Connected and the top colt Impavid. The many tipsters and all the racing journalists while agreeing ran bold headlines in their dailies that it simply is Well Connected vs Impavid in the Kingfisher Ultra Derby on Super Sunday. The rain gods too, it appeared could not change it though they wanted to play the spoiler. And at the end the railbirds witness to a thrilling down to the wire action enjoyed the day under the dark ominous clouds and the intermittent spells of rains.

In a pulse-pounding finish the two star performers flashed past the post locked together, the classy filly Well Connected from trainer Padmanabhan's yard superbly piloted by Scottish professional David Allan gaining the day, a `neck' separating the double classic winner Well Connected and Impavid at the finish.

A sharp shower before the start of the mega event did not dampen the spirits of the pros and the railbirds, packed in the stands at the Bangalore Turf Club to witness what promised to be a classic contest and they lauded the effort of the winner and the runner-up who made it possible. Impavid ran his heart out and the colt and his pilot Sandesh after leading for 1,999 metres of the 2000M trip lost in the last stride. It hurt the Arjun Manglorkar camp but in sport one has to lose for the other to win. And hopefully Impavid’s turn will come another day.

Sandesh astride Impavid hit the front and set a decent pace all through the backstretch while Knight Templar, stablemate of the fancied Well Connected followed the leader. David Allan guiding the fortunes of the classy Well Connected was content to race his filly in the fifth position for most part of the classic journey. Impavid and Sandesh after showing the way for the six best colts and four top fillies all through the backstretch quickened well at the top of the straight to establish a winning lead from Knight Templar before David packing punch on Well Connected stormed into contention. The top two favourites flashed past the post locked together but it was clear that the Queen filly had gained the day..

It was a superb effort from the winner who in her three career starts has won two classics including the big one on D-day. Bred at the famed Poonawalla Stud Farm, Well Connected is a gutsy classic disclosed her trainer Padmanabhan adding  that the champion from his yard is like Serena Williams from the tennis world, all guts and glory.

Breeder and part owner of Well Connected, Zavaray Poonawalla while lauding the effort of the champion filly was all praise for Padmanabhan and David Allan. "Padmanabhan was confident that the talented big-hearted filly would come up tops and David produced a superb effort to make us all proud," said a delighted Zavaray leading in the champion.

David Allan who has won more than 30 classics for Padmanabhan said: "The moment I reminded of her task ahead when the race came on a boil, Well Connected responded brilliantly and we got there just in time. She is a game galloper and she will add a couple more classics in the months ahead."

The lesser fancied Knotty Ash from trainer Prasanna Kumar's yard completed a hat-trick of wins this season, blowing the classy field of dozen runners in the principal added attraction, the BTC Anniversary Cup run over a distance of seven furlongs. The Hyderabad hopeful Corfe Castle from Leo D’Silva’s yard garnered the maximum support in the event which was a very open affair. The favourite it appeared did not relish the conditions and was never in the race. Knotty Ash partnered by Antony Raj hit the front and dictated the pace before zooming home in resplendent style. Prevalent Force who graced the wrong end of the field for most part of the trip produced a belated effort to gain the second spot ahead of Automatic.
