PSYCHIC FORCE WINS OPENING PLUM

By Ikram Khan | 29 Aug 2019 | MYSORE

Trainer Darius Byramji leading Psychic Force (S Zervan Up), winner of The H H Sri Jayachamaraja Wadiyar Memorial Trophy

The opening day of the season started on a promising note for trainer Darius Byramji and Arjun Manglorkar, the two leading trainers recording a good double to the delight of the followers of form. Darius led in the public rage Magic Stream and Psychic Force, winner of the opening plum, the H H Sri Jayachamaraja Wadiyar Memorial  Trophy, while Arjun Manglorkar struck through the well supported Air Command and Merlot, the winner of the Star Of Mysore Trophy. Zervan partnered both the winners from Darius Byramji's yard while John booted home the two from Arjun's stable..

Psychic Force was the overwhelming favourite in the feature event run over a mile. The public choice looked a picture of fitness at the parade ring and rightly garnered the maximum support. Zervan astride the public choice was supremely confident in the mile long event, biding his time before he timed his final challenge to a nicety. Kambaku expectedly finished a game second ahead of the Mysore hopeful Grand Tenton who caught the eye while finishing a good third and it will not be long before this Rakesh ward chalks up a win this season.

After her impressive effort in her essay in Bangalore, Magic Stream looked head and shoulders above her nine rivals in the lower division of the Indradhanush Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs. The short-priced favourite provided Zervan an arm-chair ride to success toying with her rivals while sending out a strong message that this bred in the purple daughter of Multidimensional will add to her kitty in the weeks ahead. All In gained the runner-up berth ahead of Lightning attack while Speedster  who was really not extended came home fourth.

Arjun and John opened their joint account in the Sri Krishnadevaraj Urs Memorial trophy through Air Command. The 0n-money favourite like Magic Stream darted clear the moment the race came on a boil suggesting that he is on top of his game and is set to provide an encore when saddled next. The second in demand at the betting ring, Super Success struggled at the start but did well to finish second at end. Mint gained the third spot to the delight of her supporters who had wagered heavily in place.

Merlot from Arjun's yard and Sakura from the stables od Sulaiman Attaollahi opened joint favourites before the latter was installed a firm favourite before the dozen contestants came under the starter's flag for the Star Of Mysore Trophy run over a distance of seven furlongs. John had Merlot going nice and easy for most part of the trip while Akshay Kumar was in a spot of bother early on in the race, not gaining a favourable position. The moment the field negotiated the final curve John sent Merlot sailing into the lead and it was all over bar the shouting. Merlot cruised home in resplendent style ahead of Set To Win while Sakura warmed up late and had to rest content with the third spot.

The result of the opening event of the season, the Somnathpur Plate run over a sprint shocked the followers of form, the 30 to one long shot Breaking News romping home in the hands of Gautam Raj. Star Style from trainer Santosh Rao's yard was fancied most but the favourite much to the chagrin of her followers failed to even make the frame. Tough Sussex finished second ahead of Pikachu while Vroom Vroom filled the frame. Star Style appears a `morning glory' producing impressive performances only in the morning trials and is best left ignored unless she graduates to make a favourable impression on the race track in the months ahead.

The lower division of the Indradhanush Plate saw the Pradeep Annaiah schooled Kimera prove too good. The connections of Kimera fancied the winner strongly despite the fact that he suffers from blood vessel issues. Srinath settled Kimera in a handy second position behind tjhe leader Fictioneer for most part of the seven furlongs trip before he reminded Kimera of the task ahead at the distance post and the top performer readily produced a winning gallop to put the issue beyond doubt in the final furlong. Alexander Burnes from Neil Darashah's yard who was the favourite on the strength of his maiden success at Bangalore failed to justify his ranking and finished a tame third behind Tokyo Rose.

The final event, the Pune Plate saw Trevelyan from trainer Bobby's yard make every post a winning one in the hands of Sameer. Perfect Legacy from Santosh Rao's yard was backed to the exclusion of his 11 rivals but like Star Style, Perfect Legacy too failed to enter the winners' circle, only finishing second ahead of Engelberg.
