BREEDERS CUP 2019 – SATURDAY
By Anil Mukhi | 01 Nov 2019 |
Friday’s preview appeared in these columns yesterday. Here is the preview of Saturday’s action, November 2nd. It’s an action-packed card which features a rare runner from South Korea! One wonders in which century would one see an Indian-bred in action at the Breeders’ Cup?

Covfefe, named after the infamous mis-spelled tweet by President Donald Trump, is a warm order, as indeed she should be with a record of 5 from 7. Yet she could get trapped on the inside, so at her odds, she does not appeal for the win. Come Dancing is another with a most consistent record and is favourably placed in the starting gate. Kaleem Shah’s Bellafina is 4-from-4 at Santa Anita, so ought to be great value – her last three efforts came on Eastern tracks which she probably did not appreciate.

Stormy Liberal is the defending champion, having won this in both 2017 and 2018. However, he has remained winless in six tries since the latter, although without being disgraced. He can almost certainly reproduce his best, which would get the job done. Aging millionaire Om is a speedy sort but with only 2 wins in the last four years has a mountain to climb. Totally Boss has been in superb form in 2019, although at a slightly lower level, as has Leinster. Imprimis – note the jockey booking – is not out of it by any means.

Only in America could a race be run sponsored by an entity called “Big Ass Fans”! No, it’s not a collection of racing patrons with large behinds, but rather a well-reputed manufacturer of industrial-sized fans, based in Lexington, Kentucky. The very highly regarded Omaha Beach, whose Triple Crown campaign got derailed after training issues, is the favourite following his victorious return to action on this track last month. The high-mettled Improbable looks like his principal opponent. Coal Front and Mr. Money have the right sort of profile, while the Korean-trained Blue Chipper could add spice to the finish.

For most patrons, Sistercharlie will be a “banker” in the pools, so consistent is the Irish-bred who started her career in France with Henri-Alex Pantall. Now permanently relocated to the USA, she has reeled off 6 straight victories. Trying a new trip – her pedigree suggests she will stay well – is the English 1000 Guineas winner Billesdon Brook, another fine product of Stowell Hill Partners. Her French counterpart, Castle Lady, emanates from Mr. Pantall’s yard and no doubt he will have mixed feelings should she oblige. Finally, given that her trainer just celebrated 3,000 winners in England, one cannot neglect the winner of her last four, Fanny Logan, and that too with Frankie Dettori up.

A tame effort in last year’s Breeders’ Cup mile is the only blot on the record of Catalina Cruiser, who has won his other 7 starts. He will be essaying a trip somewhat sharp for him, which is why he is not at a shorter price. Never unplaced with a career scoreline of 13-9-2-2, Mitole is the real deal. His only recent loss came when he collided with the starting gate, losing ground, despite which he was able to rally to finish third. Others with the required firepower include Shancelot, Imperial Hint and Firenze Fire. Completing the line-up is the Japanese-trained Matera Sky, who is probably over-matched.

One of the most exciting events this year is this jam-packed field of milers, with American contenders just shading the Europeans in numbers. Given that Uni, very impressive when taking the First Lady Stakes at Keeneland in new track record time last month, has been supplemented at the cost of $100,000, she ought to start as the “chalk”. Standing in her way is Circus Maximus, another Niarchos/Coolmore collaboration from Ballydoyle, whose form looks superior to all. With interference a probability, a front-running type would be at an advantage and Got Stormy qualifies best on this count. Lucullan and Without Parole should be of interest to those who prefer longshots.

With matters hotting up as the grand finale approaches, the penultimate event sees a talented field of Classic distance performers. The results logged by one of them stand out like a beacon – Bricks And Mortar has gone 6-from-6 this year. But he has never tackled 12 furlongs and one will have to take his stamina on trust. No such doubts assail the prospects of Old Persian and this year’s Investec Derby winner, Anthony Van Dyck, both proven at the trip. Although defeated in his three post-Derby outings, the last-named seems to be rounding back nicely into form and should make the most of his 4 lbs. advantage over Old Persian. Nothing else looks remotely able to upset; but then that’s why they run horse races, is it not?

Barring his debut, the tail-flashing McKinzie has started as the favourite at each of his 12 subsequent starts, and landed the odds on 7 occasions. Mike Smith has been at the controls every time he has faced the starter but this time, in a controversial move, Bob Baffert has replaced him with Joel Rosario. It remains to be seen if this is a masterstroke or an act of desperation. The California hope, who will probably again jump out with the weight of public money on his back, faces some stiff competition from the East. Probably the best dirt three-year-old around in Code Of Honor and his arch-rival, the year-older Vino Rosso are live threats. The last-named will be keen to take revenge on Code Of Honor for the disqualification he faced last time out at his hands, or should one say legs?
Noteworthy is the selection of this race by Bill Mott for his ward Elate, who could have run the Distaff instead. The consistent racemare, facing males for the first time, is a live place prospect. Mott also fields the Japanese-bred Yoshida with – guess who? – Mike Smith astride, eager to tie the record of most wins by a jockey (five) in this race. His previous winners were Arrogate, Drosselmeyer, Zenyatta and Skip Away. Should he succeed, he would join Jerry Bailey and Chris McCarron.
So who will win? I’m not clairvoyant but I can say that watching this calibre of sport will prove worth it for true fans of the Turf. Even if you have to stay awake all night.
