APPEAL FROM CALCUTTA OWNERS

By Racing Correspondent | 12 Feb 2021 | KOLKATA

It’s very unfortunate that the stable staff have stopped providing exercise for the horses for past five days.  This act of denying exercise to the horses tantamounts to confining the animals to their stalls, without relief and indefinitely so.

Horses and particularly thoroughbred horses, suffer catastrophic health consequences if they are kept confined and denied exercise. Owing to the very delicate and sensitive digestive systems of such horses, they are very prone to developing life threatening ailments such as colic and laminitis and also other debilitating injuries such as hoof damage. Another potential consequence is mental conditions arising from confinement.

Some horses had been planned to retire and move out of the race course on 10th February. These horses were forcibly prevented from leaving and were forcibly kept in confinement by the workmen.

These acts are in complete violation of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

Irrespective of the merit of the financial dispute between parties, animals should not be held to ransom or exposed to potential catastrophic health risks.
The Calcutta Racehorse Owners Society therefore requests all concerned including the stable staff and Unions to resume cleaning stalls and providing exercise to the horses, in addition to providing food and water, without any prejudice or relationship to the financial dispute between parties.
