IN-FORM THEON WINS ST.LEGER IN STYLE

By Ikram Khan | 24 Jul 2022 | BANGALORE

Mr Milan Luthria and Mrs Liane Luthria & trainer P Shroff leading Theon (P S Chouhan Up), winner of The Bangalore St.Leger (Gr.2)

The Maharaja was expected to win the final classic of the season, the Bangalore St.Leger and he did it in style. Theon from champion trainer Pesi Shroff's yard produced another brilliant effort in the energy-sapping stamina test, winning the classic from end to end and the Pesi Shroff camp was delighted. After Theon won the Maharaja's Cup, the St.Leger was at his mercy taking into account that Juliette, who had missed out on the Maharaja's after suffering a minor setback in training was not prepared to do the final classic battle.

Leading pro Pradeep Chouhan who guided Theon in the Maharaja's confidently pushed Theon to the front the moment the small four-horse field came under the starter's flag for the gruelling 2800M trip and the in-form star performer stayed in front till the very end, pegging back the challenge of the Chennai hopeful My Opinion in convincing fashion. The winner of the Stayers' Cup next will parade his skills in Pune and considering the fact that he is on top of his game, Theon is set to maintain his winning streak while adding a couple of major plums to his distinguished list.

Pesi apart, leading trainer Prasanna Kumar cornered glory on the final classic day recording a good double through the well supported Ansaldo and the public choice Tenali. The double put Prasanna firmly on top of the trainers leader board with a dozen winners to his credit, four ahead of the second placed Satish Narredu and the four point advantage appears good enough to help the unassuming pro win another championship title.

After Beldona from Kishan Thomas' yard produced his best to justify favouritism and make ample amends of his costly last start failure in the opening event, the lower division of the Camino Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs, Electric Blue provided a big electric shock  to the punters in the next event, the lower division of the Bhishma Plate. The Parvati Byramji ward, who opened on-money favourite on the strength of her second behind Ashwa Magadheera drifted out in price and was freely available at (5/4) , while the winner Ansaldo was backed down from (6/1) to (7/2). It is true that Electric Blue burst her blood vessels during the race and as a result failed to display her true potential, but what surprised most was the fact that the overwhelming favourite was only getting weaker and weaker at the betting ring suggesting that all is not well and the result only confirmed the fear. Electric Blue suffering from the blood vessel issue finished in the ruck . But you just cannot take the credit away from the Prasanna schooled Ansaldo who looked a picture of fitness at the parade ring and readily justified the confidence of his supporters. Leading pro Srinath who recorded a double produced a copybook effort on the winner who is set to provide an encore. Super Ruffian gained the runner-up berth ahead of the topweighted Striking Memory while Toronero completed the frame.

Srinath later was at his best while guiding the fortunes of the five to one shot Acaster. The top `Knight' and Suraj Narredu partnering another Parvati ward Dragon's Gold who bit the dust were locked in a ding-dong battle for most part of the final two furlongs before Srinath and Acaster to the delight of trainer Warren Singh gained the day by the shortest of margins at the shadow of the winning post. The railbirds, never mind a loser or a winner enjoyed and appreciated the saddle artistry of the top two leading artistes in the upper division of the Bhishma Plate before pointing out that like Electric Blue, the price of Dragon's Gold who opened at a miserly (65/100) drifted out to (13/10) at end.

On the strength of his impressive effort in his last essay, fast finishing second behind Millbrook, the Prasanna Kumar schooled Tenali was fancied most in the upper division of the Baraloy Plate and the favourite produced his best in the hands of the chote nawab of Hyderabad, Akshay Kumar to romp home a deserving winner. Lady Supremos from Satish Narredu's yard surprised most finishing a game second ahead of Flying Quest while the second in demand at the betting ring, Divine Blessings failed to even save money in place. The lower division of the event saw the public rage The Adviser from Sharath Kumar's yard come up trumps despite shifting out violently and racing on the sand track close home. Jockey Arvind Kumar, who enjoyed close to two lengths lead in the final furlong from Habanero, needlessly cracked the whip hard on the shocked winner, who shifted out alarmingly to the sand track before the momentum helped him spare half-length to Habanero at the wire. The injudicious crack of the whip would have cost the big bettors dear had The Adviser unseated Arvind while hitting the sand.

The principal added attraction, the D M Kumaraswamy Memorial Trophy was claimed by the topweighted Forever Together. The winner was confidently piloted by promising apprentice Angad who stayed cool while coming under pressure in the final furlong from Caracas piloted by top gun Akshay. Multistarrer partnered by Trevor did produce a late challenge but that was just not good enough to stop Forever Together from recording his second win of the season.

Vivek, another promising apprentice who is enjoying a good summer brought the curtain down steering the second in demand at the betting ring, Another Rainbow to an emphatic victory in the upper division of the Camino Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs. The apprentice who has four winners to his credit at this centre apart from a couple registered at Mysuru settled Another Rainbow in box seat for most part of the journey before he assumed command at the distance post and then put the issue beyond doubt comfortably pegging back the challenge of the favourite Thunderstruck. Daring Sweetheart who jumped out awkwardly from the gates and graced the wrong end of the field for most part of the trip caught the eye while finishing third and is one for the notebook.
