STAR GLORY WINS KARNATAKA POLICE TROPHY

By Ikram Khan | 30 Dec 2022 | BANGALORE

Trainer S Narredu leading Star Glory (Suraj Narredu up), winner of the Karnataka Police Trophy

It was a mixed bag. Four firm favourites and an identical number of lesser fancied winners including two long shots in the last two events made sure that the smile was back on the face of bookmakers, the moment rankoutsider Singhsaab from M R Singh's yard  `nosed' out the second in demand at the betting ring, Princess Jasmine in a humdinger in the concluding event. The Dominic schooled Rorito piloted by Imran Khan was backed to the exclusion of her eight rivals despite the fact that the most fancied contestant had failed to make the board in her last five attempts. Don't ask questions, just back it as a good thing was the line doing the rounds, while the nine runners competing in the upper division of the Tapti Plate circled round in the parade ring. And the moment the runners moved out of the paddock, the punters stormed the bookmakers ring and soon money started pouring in on the Dominic ward, backed down from (5/2) to (5/4), while the price on Princess Jasmine drifted out to (7/2) from (9/4).

Imran Khan tracked the speedy Apollo Light for most part of the seven furlongs trip before he cracked the whip on the hotly fancied favourite when the race came on a boil. The response from Rorito much to the chagrin of his large following was not good enough and soon it was Princess Jasmine who called the shots before she lost out to Singhsaab piloted by Ahsan Qureshi in the final stride. This shock result after the 10 to one shot Peluche dropped a bombshell in the Kali Plate run over a mile stunned the followers of form. The Md Khan schooled Kings Speech was strongly fancied, slammed from (7/4) to (5/4), most punters touting it as a `moral certainty' but the overwhelming favourite in the hands of apprentice B Darshan went `phut' like a pricked balloon in the final furlong resulting in a lot of good money going down the drain. Peluche from Imtiaz Khan's yard, who graced the wrong end of the field for most part of the mile long journey produced a winning gallop in the straight to collar Kings Speech close home and then deliver a knock-out blow on his way to enter the winners' circle.Dr Logan covered good ground at end to pip Kings Speech for the runner-up spot. It was clear that Kings Speech found the mile long trip beyond his compass and it will pay to support him over a seven furlong exercise.

Three frontline contenders, last start winner De Villiers from Sulaiman Attaollahi's yard,  Star Glory from the stables of Satish Narredu and the Kishan Thomas-trained Aztec Queen topped the betting board in the Karnataka Police Trophy, the plum event run over a sprint. De Villiers finally closed the favourite after Aztec Queen had garnered maximum support early in the betting ring. The `Jodi' to the delight of the bookies went out of the window, the moment the other fancied runner Star Glory in the hands of Suraj Narredu stole a march approaching the distance post and then kicked on gamely to comfortably peg back Aztec Queen  The Mysore challenger Indian Patriot from Rakesh's yard did well to save money in place, while the favourite in the hands of Pradeep Chouhan, fresh from his success on Forseti in the South India 2000 Guineas at Guindy on Thursday, raced in patches and finished a poor fourth, much to the disappointment of his followers. It was good to see top cop Amar Kumar Pandey give away the Karnataka Police Trophy to the winning owner Daulat Chhabria and it is needless to mention that Daulat will cherish the moment.

After failing to justify favouritism on her debut, the grey juvenile Anzac Pipernal entered the winners' circle, coming up tops in the Vindication Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs. The half-money favourite piloted by leading pro Srinath didn't have it easy and in fact had to stretch every sinew to snuff out the challenge of Granpar from Sulaiman's yard, who went down fighting, a `neck' separating him from the Dominic ward. Srinath later booted home another public choice Green Channel, who produced a winning gallop at the all-important end to reign supreme in the Phar Lap Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs. Elusive Girl from Azhar Ali's yard in her attempt to make every post a winning one looked set to land the spoils at the distance post before the Neil Devaney schooled favourite powered by Srinath stormed up to gain the day, while justifying his top billing in this moderate set.

Top gun Trevor Patel earlier booted home the Darius Byramji schooled Stormy Ocean in the Harangi Plate run over a distance of 2000 metres. The winner, who impressed most, finishing second behind Triple Wish in his last start on the opening day of the season produced another good effort to shed his maiden status. Now that Stormy Ocean has broken ice, he is poised to score again when saddled next. Castaneda was seen finishing on purposefully at end to take the second spot ahead of the topweighted Twilight Tornado, while Banksy found the first three too hot to handle.

Neil Devaney who led in Green Channel, earlier struck it rich on Baba Voss. The winner piloted in copybook style by R N Darshan edged out Southernaristocrat to the delight of the Devaney camp in the Ganga Plate run over a mile. Emeraldo surprised most finishing third ahead of Exalted Dream, while Memorable Time from Lokanath's yard finished in the ruck.

The topweighted She's Innocent from Inayathullah's yard garnered the maximum support in the opening event, the lower division of the Tapti Plate, but the public choice met a tartar in Konichiwa who earned his cornbill in the hands of apprentice jockey Likith Appu, who is enjoying a fine run this winter. Country's Jewel strongly fancied in place managed to finish third ahead of the second in demand at the betting ring Regal Force piloted by Imran Chisty.
