TALENTED SHAMROCK WINS OCTOGONAL STAKES

By Ikram Khan | 11 Mar 2023 | BANGALORE

Trainer Satish Narredu leading Shamrock (Suraj Narredu up), winner of the Shamrock

Winner of the 2000 Guineas, before his dismal effort in the Indian Derby at Mumbai, Shamrock bounced back into the winners' circle, winning the Octogonal Stakes in emphatic fashion, while sending out a message that all is well with him and he will be a force to reckon with this summer. The Satish Narredu ward partnered by a confident Suraj tracked Polished Girl for most part of the trip before Suraj reminded the talented colt, the task ahead approaching the distance post and the winner readily produced a winning gallop to seize control and romp home a deserving winner. Polished Girl finished second ahead of De Villiers, while Douglas completed the frame.

Suraj and his dad Satish Narredu later struck it rich on See My Heels in the Mount Joy Plate run over a mile. The lesser fancied winner tracked the run-away leader Own Legacy all through the backstretch before the saix-year-old mare streaked ahead a furlong from home. The winner then needed to peg back the determined efforts of the runner-up Spectacular and the favourite Clever Hans who, essayed a challenge on the rails, but Suraj kept See My Heels going and she bravely kicked on to help Suraj and Satish record a double. Speculator gained the runner-up berth ahead of the public choice Clever Hans partnered by Hindu Singh, while the second in demand at the betting ring, Augusto found the top three too hot to handle and only managed to make the board.

Like Satish and Suraj, trainer Narayan Gowda and jockey Kiran Rai combined successfully to record a nourishing double through the two well supported winners, Auspicious Queen and Baroness. The former, who had finished three lengths behind the talented Del Pico from Irfan Ghatala's yard while making her debut, was strongly fancied to score by her connections in the Maj C Newton-Davis Memorial Trophy and the daughter of Gusto justified the confidence of her supporters powering home in fine style. Pharazon caught the eye gaining the runner-up berth in his first start and Star Concept appears to have improved from his debut effort, finishing a creditable third, a `neck' separating him from Pharazon.

Offered at (6/1) at the start, the topweighted Baroness was slammed down to (4/1) in the concluding event, the upper division of the Count Fleet Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs. The winner hit the front soon after the eight runners came under the starter's flag and kept increasing the margin before the runner-up Benignity from Prithviraj's yard and Country's Jewel from the stables of Md.Khan charged home late on the scene. The winner, it was clear was under no pressure to hang on and Baroness did just that to the delight of the Gowda camp.  The favourite Altair from Sharath Kumar's yard raced in patches and eventually finished in the ruck.

Trainer Pradeep Annaiah too recorded a brace, the strongly fancied Agera and the 20 to one long shot Cash Out entering the winners' circle. Agera and the Aravind Ganapathy schooled Foi, who impressed most while finishing third behind the winner Cyrenius and runner-up Aquamatic on the eve of the Indian Turf Invitation Cup, garnered maximum support in the lower division of the Classic Trophy Trophy run over a sprint. And the two were locked in a ding-dong battle past the distance post before Agera in the hands of John gained the day. Foi in defeat was not disgraced and lives to fight another day. The upper division of the event was claimed by another Pradeep trainee Cash Out who shocked the followers of form producing a sparkling gallop in the final furlong to floor the jackpot pool hunters. Another rankoutsider Rightly Noble stormed up to take the second spot ahead of Star Admiral, while the heavily backed Sociable from Irfan Ghatala's yard failed to make the frame.

Earlier, the favourite War Trail from Sharath Kumar's yard produced his best in the hands of leading jockey Srinath to come out on top in the opening event, the lower division of the Count Fleet Plate and the 15 to one shot Queen Regnant dropped a bombshell in the Frankel Stakes run over a mile. The Aravind Ganapathy ward in what turned out to be a very open race, Speaking Of Stars, Hope Island and Armory, all three offered at (3/1), shooting through in the final 100 metres to edge out another long shot Thunderstruck at the shadow of the winning post. Katana finished third, while none of the three fancied contestants could save money in place.
