Harlamoff Packs off Rivals in Style

By Mahendra Mallya | 23 Apr 2011 | DELHI

Trainer M K Jadhav leading Harlamoff (Dashrath Singh Up), winner of The P.B. Avasia Plate

Harlamoff (Glory Of Dancer – Winning Spurs) coasted to a decisive victory creaming his rivals with an effortless five-and-quarter-length verdict. This one was a real armchair ride for Champion-in-waiting, jockey Dashrath Singh who didn’t once think of going for the whip. Harlamoff settled well off the pace in the second last position with only Midsummer Knight behind him. Living The Dream won the right to lead the field from regular front-runners Sexy Eyes and Fire Vault and galloped at a steady pace. Go Guzzi Go played the link between the front-runners and the pair in the rear. Harlamoff galloped leisurely and only started to make progress past the 800m marker.

He ambled closer to the trio in front soon on coming into the straight and then unleashed a fine turn of foot without Dashrath having to tread hard on the gas pedal. Living The Dream watched helplessly as Harlamoff went out of focus but did well to stave off Sexy Eyes who made a serious bid to take a crack at the runner-up slot. This was a commendable run of four victories on the trot for Harlamoff who is shaping up well for longer distances. Mahima (Gaswar – Chasing Shadow) shook off her maiden status and earned her first victory without much toil.

Bartimaeus did cover some ground towards the final stages but by then Mahima had well sealed the fate of the race. Mahima jumped out well and drove the advantage by taking up the running and working up a sizable lead at the turn. Bartimaeus was always in chase and though he put in an all-out effort, Mahima galloped relentlessly and kept a very straight course to return victorious. Bartimaeus was slightly green when put under pressure and that proved costly.

Rose Heaven did well to end in the money ahead of Machala. Crowned Princess (Major Impact – Breno) won the Jockeys Trophy, the feature of the day, with a spirited run warding off a stiff challenge in the final furlong by a closely finishing bunch of horses. Viva La Diva brought the field into the straight and Crowned Princess was quick to move from the second position to get past Viva La Diva from the inner rails. Ocean Emperor, the firm favourite, was in close third position but could not really quicken, the weight (61 Kgs) clearly taking its toll. Viva La Diva fought hard intending to wrest back the initiative and did cover some lost ground. However, apprentice Akash Agarwal, who is riding with high confidence, never allowed the challenger to get past and showed grit and resolve to stay ahead by a narrow margin at the wire.

Ocean Emperor ended a fighting third while Silver Soul covered good ground to end a close fourth. Ashwa Parwez (Razeen – Ladybank) carved out a convincing victory winning the 2000 m Night Crown Plate thwarting a late but serious challenge from Thunder Strike. Snatching the lead from Arshavin and Brilliant Moon early in the backstretch, Ashwa Parwez dictated his own terms and quickened well on turning for home. Ashwa Parwez showed no fatigue and there was no let up for any of the runners most of whom looked spent past the 400 m marker. Arshavin was in second after turning for home, but was not getting anywhere. Thunder Strike had a lot of ground to cover and, once in top gear, started to reduce the lead at a brisk rate. However, Ashwa Parwez was himself travelling too well and although the verdict was just a length at the winning post, Ashwa Parwez never looked in danger.

Distinguished (Alnasr Alwasheek – Pleasures) romped home to a decisive win almost winning it end to end. Striding in the front alongside Lady Black Star, Distinguished pulled away in the straight storming ahead at an alarming rate. Lady Black Star was completely outpaced and was further relegated to the fourth when River Tern and Ashwa Prayag came in with their finishing effort. River Tern did well to improve in the final furlong and ended a notable second. Stud Of Gold (Conquering Hero – Malliag) put in a powerful burst at the business end of the race to get past Chief Warrior. Stud Of Gold improved from the mid-bunch to be prominent on turning for home and midway up the straight, launched a formidable challenge up on Chief Warrior. Stud Of Gold encountered a brief tussle but was definitely travelling much better.

Jockey Zervan pushed hard and soon had Stud Of Gold accelerating at high speed to post a solid victory. Rajdoot ended a faraway third ahead of last start winner Bemisaal. Seen It All (Brave Hunter – Hungarian Rhapsody) set an auspicious trend of fancied horses doing well in most of the races on the day. Although horses like Ashwa Parwez and Stud Of Gold beat the favourites in their respective races, neither would fit the bill as a long shot. Seen It All looked good coming into the straight even as Captain Smart increased his lead and stole a march.

Along with Seen It All, Flying Tackle too provided his small number of supports something to shout about. Past the distance post, Seen It All and Flying Tackle got past Captain Smart and both were engaged in a gripping battle until the last 100 metres. This is when Flying Tackle blinked and Seen It All surged to victory with a clear margin. Hannah Montana was tailing the front bunch by some distance and did extremely well to end third, covering a lot of ground in the process. Oceanic Wisdom (Mr Mellon – Star Profile) won a hard-fought last stride victory over Lago Medio in a blinding finish. Always Smile and Glorious Miss matched early speed and were a good three lengths ahead of the rest until straightening for home.

Soon Oceanic Wisdom set about to quicken and Lago Medio wasted no time when he got an opening between horses and shot through to challenge leader Always Smile. In the final furlong, Lago Medio and Oceanic Wisdom began a high-voltage battle and went hammer and tongs with the winning post less than 100 metres ahead. They flashed past the wire together and to the delight of her followers, the Judge announced Oceanic Wisdom the winner in the narrowest verdict of the day. Always Smile ran a good third. For the professionals, trainer HJ Antia and jockey Dashrath Singh continued their good run and scored a double each.
