Chief's Dream Wins A Thriller

Outsiders romped home in most of the events framed for Thursday's racing at Mysore. The first seven races were won by long priced horses and when Valid Expectation confirmed favouritism in the last event of the day, the punters neither had the guts nor the funds to support him. The first three day's of the season had witnessed a wave of winners from the stables of champion trainer Robert Foley. Since these winners had run as firm favourites, racegoers were getting into a habit of supporting the horses from that stable with a lot of confidence. Today's racing saw the eclipse of many such runners, and with the stable drawing a blank, punters took a severe drubbing at the hands of the bookmakers. The point is better illustarted by the fact that trainer Malikarjuna, who saddled three horses during the afternoon, won with all three of them. These runners were totally neglected in the betting ring , and the odds against them were so wide that a five hundred bucks roll on them would have paid more than Rupees One Crore at the totalizators. The Star Of Mysore Gold Cup was the feature event of the day. The race was split into two divisions . The upper division was expected to be a close contest between Precede, Masquenada, Stylish Bay and Lava. The first two were sent out as the joint favourites for this race. Assaye made the early running ahead of the speedy Enchanting Girl, while the fancied runners were seen biding their time at the back. Suraj Narredu on Stylish Bay was the first to make his move and took over the running in the home stretch. The riders of Masquenada and Precede were hard at work, but were unable to get any response from their respective mounts. Lava came with a nice run on the wide outside and joined Chiefs Dream, who was seen charging through the middle. The three of them drew away from the rest. In a rare display of horsemanship, jockey I A Khan drove Chief's Dream to a thrilling last stride victory over Stylish Bay. Only a neck separated the first two horses, while Lava finished a close third. The lower division was won in a common canter by the Malikarjuna trained five year old Cheetah. This recent import from Hyderabad gave jockey Noorulla a rare winner for the season. Cheetah was taken to the front in the very early stages of the race , and kicked on to win by a widening three lengths from Associator and Super Woman. Satin Slipper was a close second till well into the straight before fading away from the scene. She can be earmarked for an early success over a sprint. This completed a first ever career treble for trainer Malikarjuna, who had already saddled the winners of the first two races of the day. In the opening event, Chandrasekar waited with Gemsbok till the final furlong of the race, before challenging Aspiring Seven for the lead. Gemsbok quickened nicely and won with a measure of comfort. Favourite Amazing Flora was a faraway third. The easiest winner from the stable was Turbanator. A R Mani was content to keep Turbanator in a handy fourth place as Running Man, Karumba and Exclusive Design cut the early pace with each other. The winner was shown daylight near the distance post , and he sped away from the rest. The margin of victory was close to five lengths. Royal Liason came with a late burst to dislodge Running Man from the second berth. The Sri V B Ramachandran Memorial Cup saw Inayathulla's Near N Dear recieving a lot of support in the betting ring. The filly was backed down from 3/1 to evens. To the dismay of her supporters, Near N Dear got left in the starting gates and took no practical part in the race.Kar O Bar tried to make all the running ,but was caught in the final stages of the race by the top weighted Authoritarian. There was fair support for Spicy Star, but this three year old found the seven furlong trip a bit too long for his capabilities. He laboured hard to finish a poor third. Another fancied runner who succumbed under pressure was the Robert Foley trained Amazing Quest. Manikandan took advantage of the innermost draw and took this speedy horse to the front. Amazing Quest had a clear advantage over his rivals and was travelling well as the field entered the straight. For no apparent reason, Amazing Quest began to veer out, and gave way to Angel Of Faith on his inside. In an extremely close finish, Amazing Quest was pushed back into third place by a late finishing Look Alike. The last named came with a smooth run in the final stages of the race ,and can be expected to score in the near future. A similar twist of fate marred the chances of another Foley trained horse. Orlando Bloom was a hot order in a sprint race for horses in class III. Vinod Shinde had Orlando Bloom in box seat as Panchakshari and Asiaticus made the early running. Orlando Bloom took over the running near the distance post, but no sooner had he done so, his jockey lost his whip. Tina's Triumph was driven relentlessly by Shoban Babu and he accelerated smoothly to go away from the rest. Rebellious came with a late bid to nose out Orlando Bloom and take the runner-up berth. Arjun Mangalorkar's Valid Expectation brought some relief to the punters ,when he just about lasted out to win from a fast finishing South Paradise. The withdrawl of second-in-demand Ever So Clever ,saw some late support for San Siro. This was another fancied runner in the days card who did not take off from the gates. Gold Grid was in front till the bend before Valid Expectation rallied on the inside and took over the running. John rode relentlessly and was relieved to pass the winning post ahead of the others. Looking to Lead ran a good race while finishing a close third.
