Devputra Succeeds After a Couple of Seasons

Most of the horses who came from the Western India to be part of the Delhi racing were able to prove their merit time and again. But the case of Devputra (late Chevron) was a bit different. Despite having had overcome the fitness problem, the gelding was not lucky to raise a winning gallop at the National Capital's race course over many occasions. However, the D-day finally came after a gap of over two years, when he packed off the class-three field in The Defence Services Cup, the main event of the Delhi races on Monday. His trainer Mohsin Khan was the lone pro to score a hat-trick through Dancing Babe and The Big Blast.

Jockeys Ranjeet Singh and Dilip Singh were able to share a brace each. The seven-year-old gelding Devputra (Brave Act - Ciel Fleuri) broke out quickly but had to wait for a couple of furlongs to improve his position from fifth to third and further awaited to pounce on the then leader Extraordinaire at the top of the straight of the mile event. The runaway victor should complete an encore. The market-mover favourite Kiana, who has not been able to taste a win in the open class, once again found herself in a dilemma to break the jinx of not justifying the favouritism and was seen to be struggling before coming from behind to occupy the runner-up slot. It is noted that Kiana is the only filly in the annals of Delhi racing to shed maiden status in the 1000 Guineas.

She was unlucky in the North India Derby when she was stripped of the blue riband title on the ground of hampering the way of Real Smasher. Extraordinaire, who ran third, should soon strike. The day's opener, which was the upper division of The Chandestly Plate, made the gathering seat-up when three horses locked their horns for the plum. Borzu Again and Foroozan left no stone unturned in foiling the start-to-finish bid of Dancing Babe (Classic Tale – Slice Of Lime) but their attempt failed short by neck and nostrils for the second and third positions respectively.

The loser should be able to earn cornbills soon. The lower division was at the mercy of The Big Blast (Itaquere Power – Persian Affair). The bay colt, who ran like a dud in his last outing with tongue-strap, was in this time without the support of the equipment. He started off lethargically but soon overcame the hiccups. Dilip brought the mount into gear and the way he wore Romario (finished third) down inch by inch, was remarkable. He also shut the door on the late-finishing Crystal Pistol, with a furlong still left. However, Crystal Pistol should make amends. Magan Singh’s King Of Lords (Rebuttal - Cool Camp) made mincemeat of the youngsters in The Presence Of Mind Plate.

Aleem Khan-trained Steel Force (Emerald Cat – Ballynahinch) completed an encore under the guidance of Rajinder in the penultimate race of the day, The Bash Of Regardless Plate. The chestnut colt should eye for the treble provided for. Roopendra Singh Shekhawat's charge Doon Boy (White Crown – Ballad Dancer) brought the curtain down by making every post a wining one in The Vayu Vega Plate. Invinsible Force, Black Partridge and Rapid Fire, who finished second, fourth and fifth respectively, should get their ovedue win before the closure of the season.
