The thread was about blanket finish involving 5 horses. As mentioned, printed results only give verdicts of first four places so 5 way finishes cannot be found from printed records.

Blanket finish is when verdicts are less than 1/4 length.

THUMBELINA. I think race you are referring to is Furioso Trophy, Pune, 5/0/92. Result was 1. GOLDEN HORN (Aslam Kader) 7/2 2. Klairon's Glory (M. Narredu) 6/1 3. Thumbelina (S.N. Chavan) 6/1 4. Lady In Red (H. Moses). Verdict was Hd, nk, 7 1/2.

One Blanket finish I can partially recall, I read it somewhere. The runner-up was favourite THUMBALINA owned by Vijay Shirke, Trained by MK Jadhav and ridden by SN Chavan (I think the race run in Pune), another one ridden by Solomon, third one was ridden by Malesh Narredu, the winner was trained by Uttam Singh and ridden by Aslam Kader at 4/1.. the name may be Classic Contender or Potential Dancer. And I also heard that Aslam challenged all the other three jockeys that he will win the race one day before, where all other jockeys fancied their mounts all of them sure of winning the race.

I think in Mumbai there was a race in which 5 horses finished on a photo finish, more details I am unable to recall, but I think Katrak's horse won.

Another Blanket finish is in the 1963 Indian Derby where Mount Everest lost in a controversial failure of the photo-finish camera and the owner Mr. Al. M. Muthukaruppan Chettiar had never sent his horses for the Indian Derby thereafter. I cant recall the other horses in the blanket finish.

Earlier in another thread I clearly said I dont want all these supporting comments of compliments whenever my selections pass thru the finish first. Rather than this, I expect people keep restraint while posting abusive comments.

Punters would earlier TARGET the TRAINERS and OWNERS whenever their favourites fail, whenever they try a Doosara or Theesara, whenever they pull their favourites and allow their friends horse to win at big odds. Punters used to abuse them relentlessly then. Nowadays these punters have no time to target or show their IRE at such owners or trainers. Now punters started gimmick and target tipsters. If our tips failed then they will call by various names, they will say our system is failure etc. ONE ELDERLY GENTLEMAN questioned me the other day about DOJ, I asked him to explain, but he vanished after making irrelevant statements. They want to simply forget the tipsters post their tips as per the merit. They should note that less than 40% races win on merit. Results of other 60% of races are purchased on mutual understanding between trainers and owners, this is essentially done to get good odds. INSTEAD OF BLAMING THE TIPSTERS, THE PUNTERS SHOULD WATCH HORSES BEFORE THE PADDOCK PARADE TO GET A CLUE OF THE RACE. I have already written about this topic in an earlier thread. This will curtail punters loss. I have a habit, even if I think a particular horse will win by 6 lengths, I wont back it even a penny, unless I see that horse in the paddock and satisfy with its look.

I vaguely remember a 5 horse photo finish. Distance..2000 meter race. Venue Bangalore. Entire field of Five locked and passed the winning post.I think winner was ridden by Aslam Khader, trained by S.M. Shah.

In very old records, verdicts between only 1st three horses were given. Then records showed verdicts for 1st four horses only. So it is difficult to know of close five horse finishes.

In recent times after digital cameras have been installed we get verdicts for all positions because time of every horse is recorded when it crosses finish line. Difference in time of two horses is converted into verdict. Old time verdicts were assessment of Judge.

Closest finish I know of came at Calcutta on 14/12/2013 when first 10 horses were covered by 2 1/2 lengths. Winner was horse called SKYWAY. Search for this horse on this site and see result of his race on 14/12/2013 you will get more details.

My printed records not computerized so I will not be able to answer all questions and sometimes I will make mistakes. Sorry for that.

One of the best ENTERTAINMENT FINISH in recent years.
We have heard Blanket finish, but 5-horses photo rarely happens.
Out of 5, three were four year olds, one 5 year old and the runner-up is aged-in-tooth 7 year old mare. As per a crony called ARC, Savannah Sound was coming from a Stud Farm after delivering a baby. DHANYA HO Horse Talk, filled with such crazy magnets !!

Welldone madmax, your rating system is Extraordinary. Keep it up.

Came to know that the race was made up for SAVANAH SOUND.

They wanted to give Mysore horse the privilege but unfortunately lost.

Aster Rose
Star Nijinsky and
Sea Lagoon.

This Race is Between SALAZAAR and STAR NIJINSKY...

last time we saw in Hydrabad Ameeta Mehra had 2 horses in that field... aster rose was favorite there...they went with STAR NIJINSKY longer odds

today also there is same situation...my first choice STAR NIJINSKY....

there are just 3 horses S.Nijnsky ,Aster rose and W.MY script.

Mehra has 25 % stake in S.N, and that is what they did in HYD .let the longest odds horse win

Moreover I find A.rose preparations are half hearted.Why no idea.

W.M.Script has been systematically prepared and an each way bet for me.

If horses like Savannah sound win in this company than no more MYS racing for me.It will be the limits of limits

In this prestigious maharajahs cup Mysore.....my selection is Star Nijinsky.
1. Firstly Main advantage of star nijinsky is Y.S. Srinath(chiku). He won deccan derby on this same horse aganist Aster rose. This horse has won 2 derbys (hyd & ooty)
2. Secondly Miss Ameeta mehra Doosra......aster rose ans star nijinsky both belong to them.
3. Suraj narredu on hot favourite its like hard to believe him.
4. Hosre# & draw# are same (just for fun)

So this are few points were i can feel Star nijinsky is best than Aster rose...

I think Salazaar has a great chance to win this race. 1600 is an ideal distance for him. Has run 6th in the Indian Derby that too in its only run on Mumbai track. Trainer was very much hopeful of its chances and it did run a pretty decent race finishing just close to 6 lengths from the winner. Its last two runs should be ignored as we know who the eventual winner was. By now John must know the horse well and after Srinath he is the ideal jockey to ride on top weight.
In racing anything can happen and we can have million excuses and reasons after the race but i am going heavy EW on Salazaar. i am going heavy as i feel place is a certainty.

P.s - MM's post has boosted my confidence as the draw is "9".
Don't worry MM i won't curse you if the horse loses :)

This race is going to be quite open and competitive as the Winning Owner will get the Cup and Rs. 10,32,075, Trainer Rs 1,25,100, Jockey Rs. 93,825, 2nd Horse Owner Rs. 4,30,031, Trainer, 52,125, Jockey Rs. 39,094, 3rd Horse Owner Rs. 1,72,013, Trainer Rs 20,850, Jockey Rs 15,637, 4th Horse Owner Rs. 86,006, Trainer Rs 10,425, Jockey Rs 7,819.

STATISTICS (Last 14 editions)

If you go by the statistics, not only leading jockeys, lesser mortals like, Vivek, BL Paswan and Ranjeet Singh also won this race. The record time still stand in the name of Field Marshal, 93.70 seconds, ridden by jockey Ranjeet Singh. Second best time clocked by Arrogant Approach 93.87 in 2015, ridden by Suraj Narredu, Aperitivo clocked the slowest time in 2007, was ridden by Suraj Narredu, incidentally all the above three horses carried 56 kgs.

With added weight of 4 Kgs at the acceptance stage, this edition have two horses – Mogadishu and Salazaar carrying top weight of 60 Kgs. Three horses carried 60 Kgs during these years and won the Cup, they are Splendid Surprise in 2008 ridden by Harish, Sprint Star in 2010 ridden by M.Narredu and Toroloco in 2013 ridden by B.L.Paswan. This year we have two horses carrying 60 Kgs, and they are Mogadishu to be ridden by Prashant P.Dhebe and Salazaar to be ridden by S.John. It is understandable S.John whose body weight is 56 kg accepting Salazaar for mere entertainment, but it is surprising Prashant with a low body weight of 45 accepting Mogadishu knowing well that he will carry 15 Kg dead weight.

Two 4 year olds won this race with Feather weight, they are Chilli Girl in 2004, carried 51.5 Kg, ridden by Harish, and One Life to Life in 2011 carried 52 Kgs and ridden by Neeraj Rawal. Surprisingly both had Draw No. 9. This year we have three fillies in the fray, Star Nijinsky 58.5 Kgs, Astor Rose 55.5 Kgs, Watchmyscript 54.5 Kgs, all three are ridden by champion jockeys, YS Srinath, Suraj Narredu and A.Sandesh respectively.

Among the trainers, jockeys and owners accepted the challenge today, Trainer Irfan Ghatala is the only trainer won a race earlier with Toroloco in 2013, this year has fielded filly Watchmyscript with Sandesh up. Jockey Suraj Narredu won twice this cup earlier in 2007 and 2015, has this year accepted filly Astor Rose fully owned by Ameeta Mehra. YS Srinath won this Cup last year with Auriga has accepted filly Star Nijinsky this year, incidentally both the horses are partly owned by Ameeta Mehra. Dr. Vijay Mallya won this Cup in 2004 with Chilly Girl has Salazaar this year trained Irfan Ghatala. Rest of the trainers, jockeys and owners assembled today are still craving to win this race for the first time.

SADLY either a Single Horse or a single trainer from the Home Centre were able to excel on this Cup so far.

Do you know, so far not a single horse from Draw Nos.1 to 6 were able to win this Cup in the last 14 editions! Why this happened so far I don’t know !! So far three horses from Draw No.7 won this race, and each from 8,9,10,11,12,13 and 14. Is it means tomorrow horses drawn from 7 to 12 will have the last laugh tomorrow? OR can it be a NEW TRAINER, a NEW OWNER, a NEW JOCKEY, or a HORSE FROM MYSORE, or a HORSE FROM DRAW No. 1 to 6, win this year’s Maharaja’s Cup?
