Exciting, Stunning And Memorable Victories

By S C Sharma | 01-Apr-2020

Horse racing is full of surprises and many races outcome are very exciting, stunning, unpredictable and memorable. The defeat of many favourites always raises the eyebrows and doubts and interpretations start in favour and against. The defeat of Multifaceted in last month’s Sprinters Cup and subsequent win on very next day in seven furlong Suresh Mahindra Multimillion trophy is still fresh in everyone’s memory. Some times some horses produce stunning results which never expected by their connections - including the  trainer and owner too. This happens when nothing is at stake. They have to loose nothing and on the contrary if they wins nobody can snatch their credit for victory but blame game starts with the loosing favourite. Like riding a over confident race - like in the case of Be Safe in 2015 when the horse lost to stablemate Quaser in a splendid and exciting finish. But after that Be Safe never proved his superiority.  If Be Safe would have won the race, the interpretations would have different. Jockey rode perfectly or not questions and doubts raised because the public fancy and favourite not won. Every time,  every favourite will win ? this cannot happen in racing field and at  number of times we discussed the factors responsible for this.

Last year at Hyderabad Consigliori won Deccan Derby in a seven horse field that too start to finish over 2000 mts making his own pace from end to end . A 40/1 shot in the hands of jockey P Ajit and the victory stunned many including the connections . Before the race claims and after the race interpretations are always different . After winning everyone wants to take credit. I remember similar case when in 2003 Jockey P Belose won on Noble Eagle the prestigious Indian Derby start to finish from end to end at 100/1 shot. Racing is full of such unpredictable and stunning results. Lot debated on Royal Tern’s defeat at the hands of Own Opinion in 1979 but that was a well planned coup and late Dr M A M Ramaswamy fully succeeded in that planning and coup. I remember many horses for their exciting and impressive victories and one such race was Snow ridden by P Shroff beaten Caminetto ridden by  Vasant Shinde and Caminetto was almost money back and bookies were hesitant to offer any odds but the fact is Caminetto lost in close finish. The finish and excitement was at peak when in 1987 Chaitanya Chakram and Capricorn almost fought  last two furlong neck and neck and stride by stride at Mahalaxmi race course and CC with L Marshall prevails over Capricorn ridden by Vasant Shinde. Victory of Delage  with Lestor Piggot in 1991 at Chennai will be remembered for long.

No one expected the defeat of all time great Elusive Pimpernel in 1995 at the hands of Consequence. What a record EP was having out of 23 runs 22  wins and only loss to Consequence that too in a tight photo finish. The defeat of Chaitanya Chakram was also not easy to forget when lesser fancied Azhar beat CC who was disadvantageouly placed against Azhar like in similar way Elusive Pimpernel placed against Consequence.

Few day’s ago Mr Arvind started a interesting debate with “ Punters Forum” and many shared their experiences and knowledge. I congratulate to all of them and Mr Arvind for sharing their experiences with openness and fairness. My racing started when Red Satin beat the another all time great Squanderer in the year 1976 in Bangaluru Colts Trial Stakes. That time I use to visit only in weekends and my favourite racing centres were Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bangaluru. I use to play tote pools with small investments and my favourite tote pools were Jackpot, treble and tanala and many times I  got good dividends which kept my interest in game intact. In 1983 when I was working In Andhra Bank head office I came in contact with trainer S Habibullah and I started devoting more time in racing activities including daily visit to track and evening discussions at stable with him. Than I brought my elder brother N P Sharma in picture to purchase horse with trainer S Haibullah and he obliged. From than I use to attend most of the auctions  where horses  sold and at one point of time my elder brother was in a  line for leading owner championship along with  S Rangarajan . Our family enjoyed good time in racing by winning many competitive and prestigious races. My best filly My Diamond Girl ( 1990 - 1993 ) won five races including one race at Bangaluru. My best colt Young Hunter ( 1992 - 1995 ) won four races including one race at Ooty and one race at Kolkata. I enjoyed my racing as a punter, owner and as a racing consultant and my services hired by many bookmakers, owners and big punters. But  I am satisfied with my all roles and I am a content person and my racing is well within my limits and I am enjoying my each and every day / moment.

My best advice to all is - be content, be happy, always think and prepare yourself for better, calculate risk factors involved in this line, know your limit , work hard and ensure best use of your investment. Always learn from the mistakes which you committed earlier on and don’t repeat them and enjoy the game. Experience teaches us a lot. There is always scope for further improvement . Believe in yourself and your ability to sustain and march ahead. Instead of blame game, try to understand the complexities and uncertainties in racing and always be cautious and responsible. Stay safe, stay at home, take good care of yourself and your family members. Thanks to all for giving me a opportunity to share my feelings and experiences including www.indiarace.com.  God bless you all.

@crk, I am very happy to have your reply and am quite sure you have the potential to do well in Horse Racing, but only condition is that you have to keep on working hard and be always fully focussed. Just remember that there are quite a few Races where you have to do  lot of digging and you may find burried/ hidden gold and that is the crux of good and deep study.Good luck,we should be in touch.

@ PDS,

Thanks for your suggestion and concern. Maths is not my weak point, as I am a Mechanical engineer by qualification. Consequently, the calculations that racing entails are an important factor in my study of races...and I would not venture to bet any race without it.

I also understand and am aware of the various unethical practices mentioned by you in your earlier post. However, such instances are exceptions rather than the norm and may vary from center to center. As such, one's study of the races in all its facets and intricacies make it all the more important and critical.

I am also fully aware of the pitfalls and having spent a decade and a half in racing, my study of races is still a work in progress!

Regards.

@crk, I would like to suggest to you only one point, if you are average in maths and dont want to use it in your handicapping, wagering, hedgging your bets and balancing of bets and losses, then please keep your Horse Racing as a moderate hobby and dont venture into heavy wagering. This is my sincere suggestion, take it or through it out of the window.Good luck, take care.

@crk,

You know what is the most dangerous aspect of Horse Racing? It is that, any body and every body who is in racing for2/ 3/4/5 years and is still in the learning stage and has a moderate scale of wagering is quite convinced that it is a very easy game to learn and with little bit of more experience he will be able to master it and start making money easily, but my friends its not like that because now you are learning what all are the pit falls, what all are the tricks various parties involved can play evan amongst them selves, i.e owners, trainers, jockeys, handlers,Jamedars, bookies, mafia and other parties( I am saying this because there are cases on record when all this has happened at important big Racing centres. I experienced a case when a leading Derby contender was poisoned and it died, it belonged to my friend, my own horse was poisoned before an important race and it picked extremely high teperature and had to be withdrawn)

An other very big factor which is always questionable, it may be intentional or unintentional is the preparation of the Horse for the Race. I can jot down a dozen or more reasons why the Horse has not come up  to the desired standard and has not won the race.  There are also dozens of imponderables due to which a horse can not win/loses a Race.

There are so many reasons which make this sport extremely challenging

From the time i have come across Major Srinivas Nargolkar, what i have noticed is, His passion for Thoroughbred racing From his Earlier capacity as the Keeper of the Indian Stud Studbook.

His Subsequent contributions have been towards Indiarace & Horsetalk in Regularly contributing articles and Previews to classics on Indiarace.

Anything informative in the Racing Industry as a whole is also Addresed to.

We should Not to forget his Timely interaction on Horsetalk Serving as an Eyeopener racegoers put forth here.Subsequently he gets to Clarify, As and when need arises based on his Necessary intervention. His approach in Clarifying doubts Brings about a semblance of Sanity on Horsetalk.

Even he is not spared when his Preview Articles do not match the Results bsequent classics end up Throwing Earning him Brickbats, instead of Understanding why such Results have come about in the first place.

Beyond this,to Expect a Thankless service in Grooming an instituion of Punters in Honing their Skills in the intricacies of Horseracing is SomeWhat Farfetched.

Horsetalk by itself has the capacity to Draw Racing experts to Comeforth With necessary inputs for punters to Hone their skills, To become more successful Punters perhaps.

Instead of Fiendly Camradarie and useful Interaction here,What Thrives is Hatred, disgust and Mistrust among Horsetalkers, leading to Sickening Neverending Gibberish by Elderly regulars Too.

Anything that comes Free is never valued Sadly.

Horsetalkers need to bring about a change in themselves in how one Interacts and contributes here.

Utilising this very useful resource is what every Racing Enthusiast has to give a thought for,.Else he will only be hitting a Deadwall in racing.

@ Chanakya Kaushik,

Anything given free is not valued, not seriously considered, and hence not appreciated. No one really benefits, even if there may be lot of value if taken advantage of for it's worth. Value for money...probably this term must be an offshoot of the above observation !

Thanks.

@ PDS,

History or Maths, probably, racing encompasses both in variable measures. Or to put it in a different way, racing is both a science and art, not necessarily manifesting in predictable or definite conclusions.

As far as maths is considered, it's application involves a little more than average understanding of basic arithmetic for purposes of handicapping, speed rating and rating of the horses (each to his own methodology). However, you will agree, the official rating does serve as an important benchmark in individual calculations for arriving at the respective numbers/values.

Having stated the above, with the calculated or arrived numbers, the art of interpreting those numbers, where all other factors of racing specific to the racing center come into critical play. Mentioning those factors would not be necessary here, but as you have rightly mentioned the art of betting is surely one of  the most important, to cite just one,

Major Srinivas Nargolkar, (Retd.) is surely qualified for such a role,. I feel. However, it is for IR and Major to decide if they find any merit in it. I just happened to air a thought! Nothing more. Frivolous, you may say. I agree.

Blame it on the Quarantine!

Thanks.

The scope and range of services can be added to meet the demands of the changing times. It is quite possible in the days ahead, there maybe lot of fundamental changes in the conduct of races. Maj. S. Nargolkar (Retd.),

Many thanks for your prompt response. The Officials' box must offer a vantage position and you must have had a terrific view indeed. I don't have access to old records but occasionally I relive those magic moments  through memories and videos. We at Horsetalk are lucky to have someone like Indian Turf Record who willingly and proactively does the thankless task of correcting our memories. After all there is no point in revelling in wrong memories.

Since more than a dozen objections before and after the Derby have been noted in the records, it is higly unlikely that an objection in the Derby could have been missed. Even Ms. Lynn Deas and one of the concerned Stewards have confirmed it. So, that is that. Thanks once again for pursuing my request to its logical end. I had also heard about the unstated convention and perhaps that was the reason. Amen!

SKVK,

Nice to have you back after a long time. Hope you will appear more often. Some years back RWITC had uploaded the videos of all the Indian classics from about 1984 / 85 on their website and fortunately I have all of them. I have watched that video of the 1992 Derby several times. Initially it may appear that Aslam resorted to foul riding. Repeated viewing however might reveal that both the horses bored and leaned on to each other but it all happened in the heat of the fierce contest and was nothing intentional.

Like you, I was fortunate to see the Indian Derby of 1992. In about two decades that I served with SBAI, I saw all the Derbies from the Officials' Box which is just below the Judge's Box on the First Floor of the Members' Enclosure at Mahalakshmi. A very cherished privilege.

As mentioned earlier, I do NOT trust my memory and go entirely by recorded facts.

The FONNS Annual  of 1991-92 (Summer Edition) makes no mention of any objection in its record of the race. I may add that more than a dozen objections, both before and after the Derby, are duly mentioned.

THE TURFITE was defunct by 1992 but I do have a copy of the bi-monthly magazine THE INDIAN THOROUGHBRED. There is no mention of any objection in the review of the race by its Editor or in the detailed section where black-type results are given.

I have spoken to one Steward of that year and he does notr emember any objection. "Had there been one, I would have remembered it," he said.

I have spoken to Ms. Lynn Deas (Mr. Ross Deas owned a share in Astonish) and she does not recall an objection.

The only conclusive evidence would have been The Register maintained by the Clerk of the Scales in the Weighing Room. It records weights -- weighed out and weighed in -- of all jockeys, any jockey changes, any colour changes, any equipment changes and other reports including objections. These records are maintained for a specified number of years. I doubt if 1992 records are available. I have not been able to check that.

I believe that it was an unwritten convention in England that objections were not lodged in a Derby. Perhaps, Willie Carson was following that ! The video of the race is available on Youtube.

Dear JP.Regarding Own Beauty. 1984 foal.THAUMATURGE  out of La Santafiora. Own beauty brought to Bombay Auction in 1986. It was withdrawn and sold privately to Trainer Khalander for his patron Mr. I.P Trehan.

Own Beauty well backed to make a winning debut in Feb 1987, lost to Fond Appeal over 1100 meter. Then exactly one month later won a 1400 meter race ridden by Jockey Shafiq

Then Summer racing started. It raced against Break Dance( warren Singh rode.Darashah trained ) and lost the race by a neck. App Jockey Islam raised an objection against Warren Singh which was turned down. In her next start towards the end of Summer Season, she won V.G. Saravanan Memorial Cup, a  2000 meter race with Jockey Shafiq. In this race, she beat Magnificent Seven ridden by Warren Singh Trained by Darashah.

In the Mysore, regular season Own Beauty reeled off a hat-trick of wins. All Cup Races(. dist 1400   1200   1600 meter ) Then she lined up for the Mysore Derby and finished Second to Brave Dancer by one and a quarter-lengths In this race S. Marshall rode Own Beauty carried a one-kilo overweight.

Then in the regular Bangalore  1987 season Own beauty was beaten by Wonder Filly CORDON BLEU in 1000 guineas,2000 guineas and in 1988 version of Arc De Triomphe.

In between, she was taken to Bombay for the Indian Oaks (1988) where she finished a close fourth to Bay Beauty.

She was taken to Hyderabad for the 1988 invitation race. It was a surprise to see her go to the post @ 10 to 1, despite the owner M.A.M. Ramaswamy telling all and sundry that she had an outstanding chance.

Lloyd Marshal on Own Beauty hit the front as soon as the gates opened and he was never headed at any point. Coming into the straight, other Ramaswamy runner GUARDIAN ANGELcame within the hailing distance and then fell back as the filly kept on and stormed away to win by Eight and a half lengths. Behind her, the other nine runners were well strung out and went past the judge one by one.

Own Beauty race just once after that finishing midfield while carrying the top weight in the K R O Association cup over a mile.during the Bangalore summer season. She was sent off to the Chettinad stud..

While many veterans will fondly and proudly remember Aslam Kader driving Astonish to a hard fought narrow victory over Willie Carson on La Bonne Vie in the 1992 Indian Derby, hardly anybody would remember our own Deepak pulling off a similar feat. Willie Carson had been flown in for a big race perhaps the Indian Derby 1983 to ride Tribute. I am not too sure if it was the same race day. In a handicap race, Deepak on Feelings and Willie Carson on Clarion Call waged a battle royal at least for the last 200 meters. It was a wonderful sight. Deepak lifted himself to another level to snatch a narrow victory.

Maj. S. Nargolkar (Retd.),

Most of the oldtimers are aware of the tremendous fight all the way down the strainght between Aslam Kader (Astonish) and Willie Carson (La Bonne Vie). It was one of those rare finishes which one can never forget. There was a lot of boring at multiple occasions during that stirring duel. I was fortunate to have witnessed that race and I remember a photo finish being anounced before Astonish was given the nod. I also seem to remember that Willie Carson raised an objection which was over ruled. However I am told that this incident of an objection having been raised is not reflected in the record books. Is it possible for you to verify from other sources whether such an objection was indeed lodged? I would be much grateful for your response.

@Ksmrow, no, we are talking about the Invitation cup, held in Hydrabad during 1978 sept, it was won by Manitou and the runner up was Ipi Tombi. You may be thinking about some other race. It has been very long time so there can be differences of dates.

The favourite in Invitation cup won by Own Beauty was Enrico. Odds opened at 90/100 and drifted subsequently to close at 16/10 at start of race.
Indian derby winner of that year Cordon Bleu  did not participate as she was running a temperature.

@Major Nargolkar, Yes you are right, I must have mixed up some facts because of the long time factor, especially about Monitou caming from Bangalore. Those days there was not much of Hydrabad Racing on the other circuits so the mix up, but I distinctly remember Corner's interview some time after winning the St Ledger that as the Race progressed, he was lying last at about 600 mtrs and did not have any hope to beat Monito, but when between 500/600 mtrs to go he saw that Monitou and Ipi Tombi were being whipped and were not gaining any ground over his mount. This was the time he alerted Linden Flora, whipped it and took over Monitou at about 300-200 mtrs and won going away, may be by 40/50 mtrs. He was definitely wearing Poonawalla's colours( From memory's records, may have some minor distortions.)

Hi Jp

Own beauty won start to finish in Hyderabad invitation ridden by jockey Lloyd Marshall after the race Vijaya mallya danced in VIP dias shouting Mera choice jeet gaya Mera choice jeet gaya Rama Swamy also shocked after that MAM removed the jockey from the stable  Lloyd marshal rest of his entire career wd Vijaya mallya.

Actually what's happend on that invitation day Star contender (I think so) ridden by robin corner was favourite 2nd favourite is Enrico ridden by jky shinde, own beauty taken start to finish in the straight also no body came near to own beauty & won by distance, after the race rumours came Vijaya mallya manipulated the race he maintained all the jockeys. My friend is working runner on 2 days of invitational weekend on VIP dias MAM & his friend one Sardarji taken jackpot tickets thru runner in that Jp  star contender was the banker & they sent few amnt to play star contender in bookie also thru runner.

@Kolramsri,

Own Beauty won Indian 1000 Guineas in 1988.Own Beauty was considered by many as a pure sprinter. On that very day it had a choice of running a sprint race or in the filley 's Classic. Many were wondering why the trainer did not take the easy way out. So Splendid was the odds on favourite,  but to everyone's surprise Own Beauty won at odds of 100/1.

Own Beauty could not do much after this race.

The very next week, Exileration won 2000 Guinness at 30 paise and went on to become one among All Time Greats.

After having replied to you, I realised that I do have a copies  of THE TURRFITE, a racing weekly published by the Sportsweek Group around that time. It took a while to locate the issue of 15 October 1978, dust it and see what I was looking for.

On page 3 of that publication is a commentary by SPOTTER on the Indian St. Leger which begins -- " Linden Flora made the early slow pace to Ipi Tombi and Manitou but nearing the 1,800 Ipi Tombi went in front ......." This appeared in print within a week of the race so was probably written even earlier. Again, I have no reason to doubt the written and printed word and it matches the independent reading of the race by FONNS..

I will be happy to provide a xerox copy if you so wish of both the FONNS and THE TURFITE.

You are right. It is difficult to remember exact details of events which occured more than 40 years ago. I don't trust my memory and usually I refer to available records.

I had checked records before responding to your request and I have done so again. I would like to state:-

   1.   You had mentioned in your posting of 7 Apr that Manitou came after  winning the "Bangalore Derby". That is incorrect. Manitou won Derby Bangalore in July 1977 and the Indian St. Leger was run in October 1978. In between, Manitou had run 9 times.

    2.  Manitou's race previous to the Indian St. Leger was Indian Turf Invitation Cup at Hyderabad on 10 Sep 1978. The result of that race is:-

     1.  MANITOU (V Shinde)  2. Ipi Tombi (N. Reuben) 3. Bright Law (R Corner). Won by 1 1/4 l, 4 l, 1 l  Time: 2:35

   3.   Running of the race. I do not have a video of the race. What I have quoted is from FONN'S ALL INDIA RECORD. I have generally found that there are very few errors made by that publication but I do accept that they are human. Let me reproduce from their 1977-78 Annual:-

        LINDEN FLORA

led till 1800ms then 2nd and last at 1600ms; improved fast to take charge at 400ms; won easily

        MANITOU

last till 1600ms then 2nd; again last at 400ms; ran on

        IPI TOMBI

2nd till 1800ms then led; again 2nd at 400ms till 200 ms; last thereafter

Only a viewing of the video can clear the air.  The comments in Fonns appeared within two months of the race and I trust them more than fading memories.  I doubt if anyone has the video of Princess Beautiful winning the first Indian Derby but everyone accepts that she won the race based on written records.

       4.  The ownership I have mentioned -- M/s. Cyrus S & Z.S. Poonawalla, Solomon F. Sopher and M.A.M. Ramaswamy -- is taken from official records of RWITC, Ltd. and Stud Book Authority of India. It is the usual practice that the horse runs in the colours of the first owner named.

@Major Nargolkar,

I would like to differ a little as to what you have written about the order of the running of this Race which I attended at Pune. It was on 8th oct 1978 and Linden Flora was a rank outsider major upset and yes there were only 3 runners( I had wrongly mentioned 4 runners in my previous) In this Ipitombi who had never run 2nd to monitou in the Invitaion cup( as mentioned) led, Monitou was running 2nd behind and Lindenflora was 3rd. At about 600 mts they started closing up, Ipitombi was failing, Monitou took the lead at about  400mtrs, was caught by Lindenflora at about 300mtrs and it drew away to appox 50 mtrs win. Lindeflora was sold by MAM and won in the colours of Poonawallas and this was their first Indian classic win and also first classic win of R Corner.

Request varify from video of the race and not any available commentry. About other details please correct me if I am wrong as this happened some 42 years ago and there may be some unintentional mistakes.Thanks. Shall be grateful. Take care.

PDS: I couldn't check up the ownership. But Linden Flora was from Poonawallas stud farm and maybe they were there as breeders and led the horse in the absence of the owners.

I think Indian Turf Record (ITR) will be able to answer or others in this forum will be having the answer.

Linden Flora was ridden by R.Corner, MAMs jockey and surprisingly the trainer was Aziz Mohammad.

Aravind. Regarding Sandy Barclay All from memory only. No records in hand to prove When  It is not easy to gather first-hand info from The Madras Race Club, even for the recent truncated Madras Season. you can imagine what I will get for certain events that happened in Dec 1985. Goldie Brown Affair.

The concerned event could be South India  1000 guineas. Winner on the Track was Goldie Brown. I played Goldie Brown @ 6/4. Barclay raised an objection against both Robin Corner and Jagdish ( riding M.A.M.'s horses) for blocking his way weaving in front of him. After unsaddling, He was so furious and started abusing M.A.M and the jockeys concerned rushed towards the Stewards room to lodge an eventual unsuccessful objection. I don't remember who rode which horse in that race.

The same day there was racing at Bangalore. I think A.  Mercer won 3 races , and I played all of them.

I was back to Bangalore on 2008 sept after a gap of 7 years stay at Malaysia/Singapore and was totally out of touch with Indian racing.( During a short visit in Feb 2006 , I remember playing velvetrope on highodds against mystical , it is just accidentally picked by observing his running on tightreins at Ruia cup)

I was continuously at losing side by started playing all races for covering losses. One day before entering course I just sitting at my favourite bar  where Mangalore dishes are available, finally decided to go back to my old tactic of playing only two races. I By the time accounted for a cumulative loss of 5+ lakh in a span of 30 day's which spoiled my base.

A horse called Lionheart just attracted me ,I like the pic Lionheart by vandamme, that horse is Razeen out of Adored ( hope it is) is coming after a set back.  The record of it is not so attractive but the owner is, Ameeta Mehra . I just wondered , why a set back horse is put into training by a stud owner. The trainer is Sharat Kumar, who is a very shrewd fellow. But decided to bet on him . By luck it got accepted in a 1400 m ( might be it is) and available at 6 to 1 at opening  I played it on tote ( almost at a bankrupt condition played each way 2k and found people totally ignored him , but that horse proved his name by winning by a blazing run from rear.

I watched the replay closely and observed that he is in very good condition. Decided to bet at next outing all the money gained on the win bet.

I patiently awaited for ( I think in the next week itself) for next acceptance, and found it was placed in a good set. While observing the replay noted that lion heart is at tight reins till 200 m , I am dead sure that if it allowed to run on merit, will clinch win. Blindly played the whole available amount half on tote and half on bookie. With my luck it won again on 8/1 and taken back almost half of the money lost in one month.

That experience taught me a good lesson, full time racing is injurious to pocket and career.

At ITR SHp payouts started at 1996 BTC, pls clarify with BTC officials.

Linden Flora (Linden Tree - Gambia) was a 'got-abroad' born at Poonawalla Estates. He was purchased by Dr. M.A.M. Ramaswamy and started racing as Ayyappa Saranam. He won two races for Dr. Ramaswamy, one at Madras and another on objection at Bangalore. However, he failed to shine in big races and at the end of 1978 Bangalore Summer season, Dr. Ramaswamy sold shares in him.

He was nowhere in Squanderer's second President of India Gold Cup, Gr.1 at Hyderabad but won a 2400 m. race at Poona a fortnight before the Indian St. Leger. He was trained by Aziz Mahmoud, ridden by R. Corner and ownership appears as M/s. M.A.M. Ramaswamy, Cyrus S. & Z.S. Poonawalla and Solomon F. Sopher.

There were only three runners in Indian St. Leger -- Manitou, Ipi Tombi (1-2 in Invitation Cup at Hyderabad) and Linden Flora. Linden Flora headed them till 1800 m. where Ipi Tombi took over and led up to the top of the straight. Linden Flora challenged him and went away for an easy victory. Manitou, who was last at the bend, finished second clear of Ipi Tombi. At no stage Ipi Tombi and Manitou raced together. As per the records, Linden Flora ran in the ownership of M/s. Cyrus S. & Z.S. Poonawalla, Solomon F. Sopher and M.A.M. Ramaswamy.

After the race Manitou was examined and found to be lame. He never ran again.

I would suggest, you please check the records again. I am quite sure Lindo flora was in the ownership of Poonawallas when it won the St leger in pune as I attended the Race in Pune. Also the Race was led by Ipitombi which failed between 600-800 mtrs and I had played Ipitombi because I did not like Monitou who had come from Bangalore after winning  the Derby and on this day he was looking heavy to me so I took a chance on Ipitombi and it failed badly( Was poor reading by me indeed) We must remember that the facts are not discussed these are varified so you can do that and I shall also do that again to give you references. At the same time would request Major Sahib to please through some light to clarify. Thanks Major Sahib. All the best

I was witness to two head to head clashes between two renowned sprinters Time and Place & Vengeance is mine. This was probably in 1988-89.

Time and Place ( Comman land--Tick rock)  trained by Z. Darashah was a lion hearted filly. She won the Sprinters cup (1988) in Hyderabad and was 3 rd in Cornelian's Sprinters cup (1989) in Mumbai. She had multiple sprint races sometimes carrying weight up to 65 kg.

Vengeance is mine was a decent Abington colt trained by S M Shah, but not a world beater.

Time and Place was running her first race of the new season,  and the bookmakers were offering generous odds of 80 pause, thinking she might be rusty. Time and Place (Warren Singh up)  was running in front as usual,  and at the bend she was challenged by Vengeance is mine (AslamKader up). It was such an battle royal and winning post came to the rescue of race commentator S N Harish ,whose voice had gone hoarse. Time and Place won in the photofinish.

With in a span of weeks the pair clashed once again. This time the Pundits expected easier win for the filly and she was quoted at half money. AslamKader in an inspired ride , suddenly overtook Time and place even before the bend, and won by 2 lengths. Opportunistic riding, if there was one.

@ Aravind : Barclay never owned a horse nor a share in any horse in India as he was not eligible as per rules of racing in our country to own a horse.   About dummy ownership that is not our concern and we can't prove that on paper even if it is a fact.   As far as incident with MAM is concerned I was told he entered some heated argument and levelled charges against MAM for winning races with unfair tactics and in turn received a serious threat and I too remember something like that I read in news papers also.    Later sensing some danger to his life Barclay took police protection and left India.  But I can't elaborate this incident in detail  and  nor I can authenticate the same as I have no further updates on this matter.

Lindanflora was owned by MAM  and not Poonawallas. Its name as a 2 year old was Saranan Ayyappa. MAM was a Ayyappa devotee. Many objections were there from his devotee friends he changed the name. Its only win other than St.Legar was in Madras ridden by Sirajuddin. Later in Bangalore it was tried at various distances would be loitering at the back and would finish with a flourish to be 2nd or 3rd.In the St.legar according to news paper it seems both Vasant and Reuben went hammer and tongs from the start like a sprint race (Iron Age and Multifaceted in the sprinters cup) and lost all the chances and Lindanflora won.

Many top jockeys ended their careers with MAM .Karan Singh, Jagadish, Aslam, Barclay. Surprisingly, B.Prakash after leaving MAM continued with Pesi though MAM offered him trainership. He made a fortune with MAM and the irony was he died penny less.

Ownership of AMBER FLASH. Old records give ownerships of horse only when he wins race. So any changes of ownership between two wins are not recorded. From available records, ownership of AMBER FLASH is:-

     1.   Mr & Mrs SK Jajodia (trainer Z Darashah)

     2.  Mr & Mrs SK Jajodia (trainer  A.B. David)

3  Mr & Mrs SK Jajodia and Dr. MAM Ramaswamy (trainer R Foley)

      4. Mr & Mrs SK Jajodia (trainer Uttam Singh)

       5. Mr & Mrs S.K. Jajodia (trainer Janardan)

@ Anil Xk

Your stories are most interesting but I am afraid contain too much imagination. I will restrict myself to only 3 points:-

       1. Shirley Valentine was by Binkhaldoun and not Diffident.

       2. Shirley Valentine was never sold for Rs. 9 lakh in auction.

       3. You say you played Crown Treasure and Arabian Rose "shp" in 1997 Invitation Cup. My friend, there was no "shp" in those days at Bangalore.

Friends.

In my memory, one of the biggest and most shocking upsets was the St Leger win of Lindonflora, a recent cl 2 winner over multi classic winner Monitou at Pune. ( please excuse my spellings of these names if I am wrong because there is a lapse of more then 4 decades now). Monitou was quoted @ 30/100, two other horses were @ 10/1 or more and Lindonflora at odds of your choice, may be 50/1 with 'Cornner' a very smart and experienced Jockey in the saddle.I think there were only 4 runners. The race started at a good pace with Ipitombi leading, the order was same up to 800 mtrs(covering 2000mtrs). At this stage Ipitombi started shortenning its stride and was being whipped, at about 600 mtrs the rider of Monitou also took to his whip and gave him a few cracks, but he did not show much acceleration, there was more whipping but not much picking up of speed. Now, Cornner could see some hope of catching up and started his whipping, here Lindonflora responded like a champion and was catching up fast, at about

300 mtrs he drew level with Monitou, the rest were already falling back and at about 200 mtrs he took the lead and beat the  great multi classic winner Monitou by almost 50 mtrs( double distance)

There was a complete hush at the Race Course, but the ownners of Lindenflora, Poonawallas were jumping away with this most unexpected glory. I have always felt that this was a great great upset.

. One more such up set was way way back, the Derby win at 100/1. Dont very clearly remember the details, some senior friend may come out with the details, it will be good fun going back so many years. Good Luck and take care. God bless

I am sure that jockeys can't own horses. I am not sure regarding the reasons for Barclay's altercation with MAM which I heard also. But the irony is that he was riding for MAM during his last stages before fading into oblivion. But many jockeys had horses in benami names. One comes readily to my mind is Own Beauty owned by jockey Shafic in benami name. This horse was purchased by MAM and went to Mumbai and won 1000 guineas. I don't know why it was not raced in Mumbai thereafter but was brought to Hyderabad where it ran the Invitation and won with L.Marshall. This was L Marshall's 2nd win in Invitation apart from Chaitanya Chakkaram. MAM was passionate in winning classics and big races that all the horses entered are tried. What I heard was that he seldom gambled in classics/big races but some small bets on all horses.

One horse which I remember is Shirley valentine..( diffident)..it is not a class horse but bought in public auction by DJSurti for 9 lakh , I noted that news and keep a note on its track work.

During those days my business( projects of sub assemblies at Pvt firms) are going in just break even manner, and invested a lot on a new work. I found that this filly running for a 1600 m on debut, but thinking about their hefty investment I punched tickets for win and place my expectation of win max 80 rsand place 31  ( by those days tote operate near Gandhi statue at 6am onwards) and gone for duty. Next day while reading news paper thrilled by its win, but lot of amount debited as tax.

Another instant was MAM horse satinlover, that horse lost two consecutive races even fancied by public. I lost both times as Artidoctor is one of my pet trainer till the day. When checked the race book for the next outing, satinlover is least fancied by public. I found that it given swimming training everyday multiple times.

Being enthusiastic about that activity, I searched net and found the merits of it.Only 1500 Rs was the days budget including 500 for drinks.I planned to punch ticket's from outer counter and to go for a film( I think it is America America), because planned to come for next day race. For my luck it paid 1206 Rs for win and 179 place.

Another memory was about Starsupreme ,who was attracted just by the name.

It  is 1997 summer , First race I won on Little pleasure( sp Khaitan,Ponnappa, guruprasad pains 892 on tote ) and planned to wind up for the day. Then as usual gone to bar and start enjoying my favourite drink , I just studied card once more, the two MAM horses one colt cadeux generous/ gourgandine- the first foal of gourgandine- in India, sorry to forgetting the horse name, in a 1200 m and Starsupreme( razeen galiceno) ridden by Aslam on another race. Suddenly I asked myself why Aslam when C.Krishnan ( riding bold effort first race, S. Narredu, M.Narredu are available). I checked his record and found that he was unplaced in 7 outings, and many times jockey's complained that horse not responding properly.

I planned to go back to course and if looks fit play it. I found him moving very casually at paddock, available at 8/1 but when Aslam was mounted ,Zi read some kind of readiness in horse face. ( May be good bad mad horse viewers can find that ) I played him win place at bookies as tote shows only 56 Rs.

He started late, but catch the bogie by 1000 m, at the 400 m it just opened shoulders and started galloping with binocular it is so visible.. eventhough he is behind by several length, I ( very young may be 24) jumped up and start shouting, everybody look's at me ...but with out whipping he won by 2 lengths . I was so happy not only by the amount scored, but to find out a true champion....he won summerderby as hot favourite, and continued till Indian Derby.

Arvind: you have mentioned that late MAM wanted to purchase Amberflash from Barclay. Barclay was a jockey and how could he own a horse ? If my memory is right Amberflash was MAMs horse and it was ridden by Sirajuddin in one of races in Bangalore.

Regarding my entry into racing when  I was in high school. My first Derby was Pendragon's win ridden by Ferris. Though I knew nothing about racing ,I used to meticulously read track reports every Wednesday's since Tuesday was tracking for most stables and each paper had more than half page reports. Then every Saturday's The Hindu used to publish reviews by their correspondents of the respective center. This gave lot of inputs about the horses. I knew nothing about handicap and other details. I used to remember the best tracked horse and simply follow. It will be matter of laughter if I say that some horses names used to impress me and with good track I used to play. One example could be Enter The Red which won at very long odds ridded by Sugumar. This was a banker in my JP and solved. Another one is Venus De Milo. I read that this horse had a set back after 1000 guineas at Mumbai and coming to Bangalore for the first Invitation at Bangalore. It had a preparatory run and was entered in the Invitation. Duffy who won most of the big races that season was riding Venus. It was banker in my JP.  I was sick and sent my selection through my brother in law and his friend.  JP amount was Rs. 40 lacs plus. I had kept 4 horses in the last leg and one was Ajanta ridden by B.Raj . These people lost some money earlier and so to reduce the JP amount removed Ajanta in the last leg and few from other legs. Though all the legs passed and the last leg was won by Ajanta.  Luckily, the treble was not altered and we won about 2 lacs.

I was lucky to win forecast and quinella single tickets few times each amounting to Rs.9000/ (approximately). Since then I have won 4to 5 times JP.  Sometimes the friends distract you from betting your choices.Few examples were my choices and I didn't back them.

Psychic Flame Indian Derby ridden by Pesi.Starsky Indian Derby. Diabolical Indian Derby. Murioi PBMM, Julliet first win against Sultan Sulaiman and I have forgotten so many.

I have watched 2 great fillies in entire my life (1) DIVINE LIGHT - (2) JAQUELYN, When I visited Bangalore invitation weekend to play CHAITANYA CHAKRAM previous day Divine light got opportunity to ride in a draw for m.kinane on those days foreign jockeys/Indian jockeys competition on invitational weekends, RR byramji trainer horse won in a great style under the rider he didn't do anything just simply sat on the horse until entering straight then he released the rains & just pushed that's all what a tremendous acceleration I have thrilled after that horse won great races and the record timing of 16mts is still on her name wd d top wt of 59kgs.

2nd one JAQUELYN is a great filly from mum the horse only lost in invitation at mum by BECKET everybody not knows main reason why horse lost on that day Richard Hughes given statement at 400 mts marker his leg has broken that's why I have not given pressure to the filly then also ran great race lost on photo after passing the post he got down from the horse he brought the filly to paddock wd the tears in his eyes he applauded the filly & told I have never seen like this filly in my life hats off to this filly he told. So this is my statement abt these 2 fillies anyone want to share their memories they can share please.

Dear Friend's

I started my racing carreer in 1993 summer, totally in an accidental manner came to course. I met a gentleman who is the only man in India wrote a beautiful novel about horse racing life of a punter (It is in Malayalam kuthira- horse). We shared thoughts and suggestions for next three years till his sad demise.

I am not a hardcore punter till the day and play selectively, but sometimes gained and lost as I follow selective horses.

A young brigade of trainers introduced into BTC , Darius, Mohan Valvi, Michael Eashwer, Loknath Gowda, Irfan ghatala , SKH khan etc making selections complicated.

The first batch of horses which I started following are Fire arch(hyd I never lost a bet on that wonderful athlete) ,Ministerial, Amazing grey, Secret star, and salute her.

I lost considerable amount in 1996 Indian derby by betting on ministerial place , first time bet with bookie and lost sleep. The invitation cup is scheduled at BTC, and surprisingly ministerial was in line. Taken two weeks off from job and stayed at Kapil's hotel only to watch track work.

Ministerial not worked in day , given only swimming exercises, Finally just two days before the race I got a glimpse of him.Decided to bet full amount on him, but the favourite crown treasure attracted me also.

The paddock was full of superstars, the un defeated Bombay star Indictment, Jaguar, San lawrenso, Secret star, crown treasure, Amazing grey, ministerial etc.

Ministerial came last to the paddok, he just walks like a determined soldier...I bet win on him, found Arabian rose with Ruzzan getting instructions from Mallya, I noted it and played both crown treasure and Arabian rose shp..

The race started Arabian rose made a cracking pace..at the final 200 metres Arabian rose , indictment, crown treasure, amazing grey are running equal , but in lat 50 metres J fortune turned ministerial to far outside and he came like a lightning...eight horses in photo finish... ministerial won, crown treasure second(215 shp)Arabian rose third.

I found Darius looked so furious with the loss...his face was noted in mind as he was so sure of winning that race.

That result given me confidence in following a horse of merit irrespective of loss as it will give back in time.

I got enough fund to travel my first visit to singapore and Malaysia and enjoyed it..will continue

@Sharmaji,

In one of your posts you mentioned about the gelding Biscuit. I have a few memories about him.

He actually ran during late eighties. Like all Riyahi colts, he was highly temperamental and a 'star gazer'. Byramji ran him in Bangalore Summer Derby (1988 ?) as a front-runner as desired by the owner VM and he finished off nowhere. Later Byramji confined him to sprints and after the horse had reached its limits passed it on to his protege,  trainer Ponnappa.

After couple of years  legendary jockey L. Piggott, came to India to ride for VM. He was brought to BTC to ride in Sprinters Trial Stakes. Byramji has entered King Air, while Ponnappa entered Biscuit. VM didn't want to take any risk with Lester Piggott with upcoming Indian Derby and gave him King Air.Punters took King Air as moral certainty and he was installed as moral certainty. The temperamental Biscuit,  with Satish Narredu up,  won the sprint race in record time.

In fact that record time stood in BTC for a long long time.

It's Native Chieften ridden by Krishnan took long lead and everybody including Asksmjhader failed to read the race and lost. All fined. But after that Native Chieften not won any big races.

I stongly belive races set up are started early in this century only. 70,80,90s Horeses are run on merit and Jockeys showed true skill. Those days owners trainers not  indulge dirty game, they feel it's a sin.  But present days it's entirely different ball game. Everyone indulge in pulling. Sometime Club itself ask owners to pull. Coz club need JP carried over to increase next day sales.

Aravind said ...

Sharmaji ppls talking abt pulling and winning is recent pictures. Three decads back it was not. Every owner trainer tried to win races and Jockeys shiws their true skill. But due to money power present days there are many races set up by connections. It cannot be avoided. Only punters shd be careful and use  brain to identify such set up races and avoid big bettings.

As far as Sport of Skill many years back Barclay bought Amberflash. It won few races and MAM interested to buy from Barclay but he refused.  So getting upset MAM decided to beat Amber Flash with lesser known horse.

It was in Bangalore Amber Flash was favourite and he ran true to his merit.Masyer Key owned by MAM ridden by Jagdish. What Jagdish did in this race was kept Masterkey far behind untill 200 Mts. Barclay was confident and thinking his horse was travelling well by this time Jagdish swallied Masterkey with 10/20 whiplash and horse fly like anything and heat AF in last stride. Barclay upset totally. That's how surprise shocking results in racing happens last century.

Friends:

I wish to give one incident. I was working in Mumbai. I think year 1976 or 1977 I do not remember exactly. At that time Gokuldas Family was popular in Racing Circle in Mumbai Mahalaxmi Race Course. In one Race Gokuldas put two horses in the same Race - Sonarica and Gerenuk. Sonarica was riiden by Shammu Chavan and Gerenuk - Jagdish. Sonarica was hot favorite and Gerenuk was third or Fourth favorite.  Shammu Chavan took a lead as usual but at the finishing point Gerenuk took over and won by a whisker. Everybody disappointed and there was a riot at the Race course and everybody abused Shammu Chavan - Bewada pulled the horse or slept for a while ! But the Race was clear no possibility of any objection. Jagdish rode a  good and clear Race.

Funniest part is Jagdish had a mass following at the Mahalaxmi Race Course. All the Mill workers were quietly standing at the counter to collect the winning stakes. One fellow even quoted - Jagdish baitega tho goda jeethna mangtha hai  Kaikeliye Lapdabaji kartha hai ye log  Dheemag nahin hai tho kyon Race kelnekeliye aathe hain

Meaning When Jagdish rides the horse must win why these people makes noise and if they do not have brain why they are coming to play Races !

Due to Riot all remaining were races cancelled ! We all went home

Best Regards to all

@ Aravind : As far as the incident of Tribute and Birthday Girl is concerned to be honest I do not remember much as at that time I was not focused on Chennai and Ooty races as I was told and believed that horses were not allowed to run on merit there and many race results are fixed and decided before the race alongwith order of placings. My first face to face meeting with late MAM was in 1991 when I was in Chennai in connection with annual auction sale of horses. I purchased Chettinad stud colt  Kristal Rock - Allegra from MAM and the colt later named as Young Hunter. At that time MAM invited my trainer to visit Ooty and we sent our few horses there for two racing seasons and won some races . Our  family filly Golden Chance finished second in Nilgiri’s Derby too.

When I was about  to enter in racing at that time the very hot topic in debate was the stunning defeat of hottest short priced favourite Red Cockade in Bangaluru derby in 1975 on which crore and crores of rupees betted and I was told that the colt RC was kept under tight security and brought to race course escorted by policeman. R R Byramji trained Comanche with jockey Jagdeesh in saddle won that derby and Red Cockade lost tamely. Some critics pointed after the race that RC’s most suited distance was mile and the derby distance of 2000 mts proved fatal but these all are after the race interpretations and assessment. Before the race all claims were in favour of RC and declared the colt as moral certainty in derby. Another stunning race I cannot forget of 80’s may be between 1984 to 1986 when hottest favourite Biscuit ridden by Vasant Shinde lost to rank outsider Hihawk ridden by out of form and average jockey Maneesh. These all incidents points about the claims of certainty in racing and cautious us about taking anything as granted.

Ksmrow, Chanakya, Sun, Ruchi, PDS, L Shyam Sunddar and all others interested,

While comparing the timings of Jetfire in R Nos. 84, 118 and 148 I happened to compile the following data.

JETFIRE

R No – Date / Serial No / Time / Weight carried / Timing / PNR / False Rails

R 84 – 9.1.20 / 4th race / 4 PM / 60 / 1.11.82 / 3.9 / 3.1200 – 5.1000 – 6.800 – 7.WP

R 118 – 1.2.20 / 6th race / 7 PM / 61 / 1.11.92 / 3.8 / 3.1200 – 4.1000 – 6.WP

R 148 – 16.2.20 / 6th race / 4.30PM / 51 / 1.11.86 / 3.9 / 2.1200 – 3.1000 – 5.WP

The above data reveals that the PNR values for 9.1.20 (R 84) and 16.2.20 (R 148) are exactly same. False rails for R 9.1.20 are marginally wider. However, despite this, to my surprise I found that the timing of Jetfire in R 148 is substantially slower considering the weights as already pointed out by L Shyam Sunddar.

Same is the case with Anatevka.

ANATEVKA

R 84 – 9.1.20 / 4th race / 4 PM / 56.5 / 1.10.84

R148 – 16.2.20 / 6th race / 4.30 PM / 53.0 / 1.11.28

In fact the timings of all the races run on 16.2.20 are substantially slower than those run on 9.1.20. The timings on 1.2.20 seems to be more or less in line with those on 9.1.20 considering the PNR values and width of false rails. This raises serious questions about the reliability of the PNR values for the day as published by RWITC. It appears that punters who use this data have an added responsibility to first ascertain whether the published data is correct.

Thanks Sharmaji. Actually I posted Punters forum to know about people's interest in racing. I am little bit upset that many big old punters not shared their experiance. But it's ok as long as punters enjoyed whatever given to them.

I agreed your view that racing is all if surprises, shocking, even sometime owners, trainers wud nithave expected such results.

As you must be fully aware I just want to rewind one Race which actually went against Owner, Trainer.  Dr. MAM, Trainer AB David, jockey Jagdish were were confident about Tribute over and above Birthday Girl. In that race they all expected favourite Tribute wud win easily ridden by Jagadish and instructed Low jockey of Birthday girl to play second fiddle, but clearly told Low to finish second to beat another stable horse which was touted as competetor for Tribute. All went as per plan of Dr. MAM untill home stretch. Rounding the bend Jadish took Tribute little bit wider, by the time Amberflash took lead seeing this change Low put BG on top gear and beat AF by neck. Everybody innstand even Dr.MAM and David, didn't expect this result.

I had chance meeting with David and Jagdish in Ooty after this incident shared this defeat. Jagdish laughling told it's all part of Racing. But David admitted Jagdish mistake at all important stage.

Sharmaji if you have anything about unexpected finish pl share. I have one more with same Jagdish in Bangalore. I will share tomorrow
