Stunning Rose Inches Closer to Classic Treble

"Further she/he goes, better she/he goes," late S.N. Harish, who was the voice of Indian racing, used to describe a horse whom he found too good. It suits Stunning Rose, who demolished the field en route to complete a classic double while annexing the North India 2000 Guineas on Tuesday. Earlier, she had just managed to tame Gin And Tonic in the nick of time in the North India 1000 Guineas. Moreover, Rajesh Sahgal who jointly owned the filly with Sultan Singh had one more reason to smile as his team (Peace Stead) had lifted the Sanawar Polo Trophy on Sunday and that too within the heart of Delhi Race Club - Jaipur Polo Ground. Seeing the previous performance of the daughter of Royal Gladiator and Mount Rose, an easy victory was not expected. But erection of false rails and assistance of champion jockey from Western India made it easy for her. Where she drifted out to stand side in the first blue riband race, she did not dare to do so under the handling of Malesh Narredu. She took off with the field and was up with the front runner King Challenge before being displaced by Senegal near half-way down the seven-furlong trip. In spite of this, she was kept on task and that bore fruits when she found the latter running out of steam before entering into the last furlong. With this victory, the Aleem trainee is now on the course of completing the classic treble as the Derby will be within her reach if she does not meet with the outstation horses. It is noted that a number of outstation horses have been nominated for the coveted event but no one has arrived as yet. Senegal (Ansbach/Tele Sport) was in with no experience of travelling over beyond the spinters distance and that marred his reputation. His mother was a well-known speedster at this centre and had the same event to her credit while sharing it with the one of the Dr MAM Ramaswamy-owned horses before being retired to the stud. A lack of initial speed forced the English jockey Richard Smith to push him in quick session to take up charge before the final curve and that resulted in tiring out at the time of need. The Rock has not been able to regain his form as he even struggled to keep his stablemate "Jovial" away by a neck for the third spot. The latter has improved vastly. An overcast sky with light drizzle welcomed the gathering and favourites ruled the roost in most races of the day. Vikram Singh Parmar-trained Silver Peg completed a remarkable hat-trick under the guidance of jockey Ramandeep Singh Bal. The closing favourite Murban did not figure on the board and later he was detected with blood vessel burst. Richard Smith, who flew in a couple of days before the meeting, had to work hard on the slow beginner and his first Indian mount Fraud to run third behind Queen Amedale, who was handled poorly. Later, in the following RP Vohra Memorial Cup, Richard went on to record his first ever victory in India. But again, he had to toil hard on the under odd-on As You wish. The colt took a sluggish start and in spite of this, he kept him alerting to the task assigned for. The brother of Strengthtosucceeed, who was one of the best juveniles during the previous season, regained his sense during the closing stages to foil the start-to-finish bid of Outstanding. It appears that Magan Singh-trained colt would sooner or later establish a staying power. Local champ Rajinder had an armchair ride on Vagabond in the Indian Army Cup. The Rajesh Sahgal and Sultan Singh-owned colt should complete an encore. Interestingly, the horses who ran second and third - More Than A Woman and The Praetorian, respectively also belong to the stable of victor. Rajinder earned his hard fought double on the under odd-on favourite Quality Assurance. The highly actioned filly just survived against Dazzling Flame, as the latter picked up momentum at the eleventh hour. The bay gelding Dazzling Flame, who flopped twice over shorter trip before scoring over the mile, showed that he is capable of performing well over any distance. Time Gentlemen caused an upset in the Air Headquarter Plate. The in-form apprentice Riazuddin had to face the stewards on an objection for meeting interference by the third place holder Rajinder (Dream Debut). Dream Debut, who had received a severe bump around 950 m, got the opening late, otherwise he could have easily made it. Cataluniya, who was stunned narrowly by Black Chetak in the previous outing over 1,400 m, ran on to be a late close fourth in a three-way finish for the minor placings.
