Stuning Rose rises to the occasion

Stunning Rose rose to the occasion and took a sweet revenge on "The Rock" in the last "million" event for the three-year-old horses which was sponsored by the Usha and Mehra Stud on the last day of the financial year. In-form Gin And Tonic continued to sparkle by becoming the first youngster to complete a quadruple in the on going season. In the absence of unbeaten Strength to Succeed, the colts trial stakes, Sohna Stud and Sports Lifestyle Million winner, Mandji, winner of the Jagatjit Industries Million and the other prominent horses plagued by one problem and the other, Stunning Rose and The Rock held the centre stage. As the duo came out of the blocks with the other six for three seven furlongs trip, The Rock did try to adopt the start-to-finish tactics which had earlier enable him to clich the first multi-million race at this centre. Sitting by the tail of the leader, Kerry Blue and Stunning Rose awaited for their turn eagerly till they homeward bound. Seeing Kerry unable to bear the pace, jockey Malesh Narredy asked for an effort from Stunning Rose, who in turn, not only responded well by displacing the former but also came in to the position where from she could have launched an assualt. Hardly, The Rock brought the field into the straight, the daughter of Royal Galdiator and Mount Rose loomed large and turned the table on the former with still the winning post was 300 metres ahead of her. Undoubtedly, she was rated high at the beginning of the season and had lived up to the expecations in the debut. But she flopped aftwards and the fitness problem was the main cause. In spite of that, she ran bravely in the last two outings where she played the role of second fiddle. But it was the handicap which finally helped her to have a date with the winning post." "Her victory was on the card as she had lost the race narrowly earlier and moreover, the weight she was carrying was in her favour" Aleem Khan, trainer, told me. "For her the season is over and she will be in diffrent shape in the next calender", he said. The main cause of defeat of The Rock was the disadvantgeous handicap. He was in receipt of many kilograms against the eventual winner and that made all the difference. The horse has the potential of scaling new heights. He should be tried to run with the strategy of coming from behind which enabled him the Northern India Cup in stead of leading the front from the jump. Quality Assurance managed to get the third place. Going against all odds, Gin And Tonic proved that youngsters do have the unknown potential. Picking up momentum from the last narrow victory she scored last week in class three, she once again demolished the class two field by making every post a winning one and getting half-a-length better of the late galloping Antarctic Zone (ex: Orion). Interestingly, her last three victory has been a matter of close call. The grand daughter of Ruby Tuesday and daughter of Celine Dion, the three year old filly kept her hope alive to step into the boots of the top class family. Her mother has been the champion sprinter twice at this centre and the grand-mom was the 1000 Guineas winner. Apart from Stunning Rose, she was the second best looking filly in the card of six races. She should continue her wining streak over the shorter trip. "She is small in height but great in heart that’s why she runs with vengeance", Umang Kumar, owner, told me. "She will be kept in rest and begin her show in the next season", he said. Antarctic Zone has come to hands. The day saw Spicy Move upsetting the calculations in the opener. The filly, who earlier finished nowhere, made the many raising their eyebrows. Al Jawat, who was running after a long lay off, played the role of onlooker. He should make amends. High Commissioner also followed the path of Spicy Move and that too over the shorter trip over which no one could have even guessed. Winning Chick foiled the start to finish bid of Hello Dolly by a neck over 1,100m but the run of Sun dancer was impressive. He missed the kick and by the time he geared himself to stake a claim the race slipped out of his way. He should be followed over the longer trip.
