Shakleford
Shakleford (By Forestry), trained by Dale Roman and ridden by Jesus L Castanon dashed the Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom’s aspiration of winning the prestigious Triple Crown, when he went on to win the Preakness Stakes (Gr.I) on Saturday. Animal Kingdom was under the spotlight after his impressive victory in the Kentucky Derby and was strongly fancied to provide an encore. However, Shakleford, having had the experience of running fourth behind Animal Kingdom in the Kentucky Derby, seemed to know exactly how to go about turning the tables on his last start conqueror.
The initial pace of the race was a lot truer than the Kentucky Derby, with Shakleford and Castanon at the helm. They eased a bit through the backstretch and Shakleford reserved crucial energy which was to come in handy at the business end of the race. Unperturbed by the hectic activity in the front, Animal Kingdom settled comfortably and was biding his time striding in fine rhythm all through.
At the final turn, Shakleford drove home the advantage and shifted gears to up the ante. Soon Animal Kingdom began to make rapid progress and looked good enough to leave his reputation untarnished. Shakleford, however, had other ideas and jockey Castanon produced the best out of him all through those prolonged moments and last out the hard-fought battle all the way to the post.
