Misty For Me Emerges a Clear Winner in Irish 1000 Guineas
By Racing Correspondent | 23 May 2011 |
Misty For Me
Misty For Me, by Galileo, provided trainer A.P. O’Brien a Guineas double by winning The Etihad Airways Irish 1000 Guineas (Gr1), in a scintillating finish pegging back stablemate Together in a thriller. O’Brein had earlier won the 2000 Guineas at the Curragh a day earlier with Roderic O’Connor. It certainly proved a rewarding weekend for the astute trainer.
Misty For Me was not too far from the front-running Claiomh Solais coming into the final two furlongs when Together saw a widening gap between horses to poke through. Together came into the final furlong looking to go for the kill, but soon had Msity For Me swooping down at a brisk rate. There was no tussle between them as Misty For Me quickened alarmingly in the final few yards to zip past Together in a flash. Laughing Lashes finished on well to snatch the third place in a close finish edging out long time leader Claiomh Solais.
It was a one-two for Ballydoyle in the Guineas. Misty For Me, although not the overwhelming favourite, had her share of supporters, all of whom reaped rich rewards at lucrative odds (5/1). Jockey Seamie Hefferman rode the filly for owners Michael Tabor, Susan Magnier and Derrick Smith.
