Dancing Rain

A brilliant start-to-finish ride by Johnny Murtagh enabled the 20-1 shot Dancing Rain lift the Investec Oaks at Epsom, in only her fourth start. The daughter of Danehill Dancer gave her trainer William Haggas his second classic triumph at Epsom from as many runners, having won the Derby with Shaamit in 1996. In what may be called as one of the best rides of his career, Johnny Murtagh shot into the lead right from the start, as there was no pace in the race, even as Kieren Fallon kept the 3-1 Wonder Of Wonders in second throughout. Up the final straight, the chestnut filly kept pulling out more and spared ¾ of a length at the finish despite the best efforts of Kieren Fallon on Wonder Of Wonders to get to terms. Dancing Rain got the trip of 1m 4f in a timing of 2 min 41.73 secs, which is 6.43 secs slower than the course average.

Izzi Top, who had beaten Dancing Rain when they met last at Newbury, managed a third place, four lengths behind the runner-up. The favourite Blue Bunting lost the third place close home and Frankie Dettori, the jockey, was handed a ten-day ban for dropping his hands before the winning post and the suspension will run from June 17 to 26 inclusive. Dettori blamed the poor performance of Blue Bunting on the slow pace and undulating track.
