Ruler On Ice Surprises in Belmont Stakes

Ruler On Ice
Continuous rain at New York on Saturday turned the race track at Belmont rather slushy and it was a day of upsets on the big day. The Belmont Stakes (Gr1), which is the final leg of the U.S. Triple Crown, turned out to be a shocker too, with Kelly Breen-trained Ruler On Ice by Roman Ruler, a 25-1 long shot stunning the field. Jockey Jose Valdivia Jr. had the chestnut gelding a handy second, behind the Preakness Stakes winner, Shackleford, till 1f out and assumed charge to win by three parts of a length from Stay Thirsty putting pressure in the final stages. Trainer Kelly Breen added blinkers to Ruler On Ice and the change seems to have favoured the gelding to a great extent in his victory.
Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom was posted as the favourite in the race but luck was definitely not on his side. He clipped heels soon after the start, after getting cramped for room between Monzon and Mucho Macho Man, and jockey John Velazquez lost his left iron. In spite of the handicapped ride, Animal Kingdom made a bid in the final furlong but he was a spent force by then on the slushy underfoot conditions and finished sixth behind the early leader Shackleford.
