Golden Lilac has pulled off a Pouliches-Diane Classic double. The daughter of Galileo showed plenty of stamina to win the G1 Prix de Diane – Longines, at Chantilly, on Sunday. After an impressive victory in the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches over a mile, staying the Diane trip was the only big question she had to answer and boy, did she answer and how! Golden Lilac proved to be a filly with a great heart, packed with a generous blend of speed and stamina. She took off early over the 1 m 21/2 f race, then settled well with the pace, finishing off in style to land the big prize in front of packed stands.

"Beforehand, I really had doubts about whether she would stay, as her dam Grey Lilas (Ire) (Danehill) was a fast filly who was best at a mile," trainer Andre Fabre commented. "So I had concerns, but she shook them off in great style and won well."

After taking a forward position early in the race, jockey Maxime Guyon settled her well in fourth along the rails. Golden Lilac was pulled out 2f out to be given a clear run and the daughter of Galileo showed grit to shoot ahead and hold on by a length from the even-money favourite Galikova. The favourite fought gallantly but found one better in the Fabre filly, who did everything right on the day.

The trainer-jockey combination of Andre Fabre and Maxime Guyon stamped their authority on the eventful day, winning three other G3 races at Chantilly in addition to the plum of the day.

Golden Lilac's achievement was akin to the great Zarkava, who not so long ago won the Pouliches-Diane double, and this victory squarely enhances her chances in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
