The curtain raiser of the five-day championship at the Royal Ascot got off to an exciting start with Richard Hannon-trained Canford Cliffs (by Tagula) ridden to a thrilling victory by Richard Hughes in the Queen Anne Stakes (Group 1). “It’s all about confidence and to gain that confidence it’s important to have an early winner,” said Richard Hughes before the race and the favourite for the jockey's championship at the Ascot has got off to a flying start.
The gates opened to the roar of the crowd and Cape Blanco headed the field with Flash Dance just behind in the mile straight. The champion filly Goldikova was in third and Richard Hughes blooming in confidence in almost sixth. Frankie Dettori on Rio De La Plata made his first move down the line with Goldikova getting into action and Canford Cliff improving with a furlong left. Cityscape looked threatening widest of all but it was straight between the filly and the colt and Canford Cliffs was the best by three parts of a length at the finish.
