A field of 19 faced the starter in the King’s Stand Stakes (Group 1), a 5-furlong sprint, with the favourites at 6-1. Sweet Sanette did the running with much fancied Overdose being prominent along the rails. The sheep-skinned Prohibit, with Jim Crowley atop, was right there hidden behind. At the final boil, Prohibit prevailed stopping the fast finishing Australian-trained Star Witness, to win the King’s Stand. The verdict was half-a-length, with Sweet Sanette finishing third a further half-a-length behind and Overdose staying in fourth.
“I can’t believe that’s just happened – has it happened!” exclaimed a beaming trainer Robert Cowell, adding further, “I’m overwhelmed. I’ve got sunglasses on, so you won’t notice I’m crying.”
Henry Cecil-trained Guineas winning son of Galileo, named Frankel, hit the finishing line first, for the seventh consecutive time, in the St. James’s Palace Stakes (Group 1), at Royal Ascot. In a rush to finish the race early, Tom Queally went in chase of the run-away pacemaker Rerouted half-way from home and leading into the home straight with four lengths to spare. The field then closed on the leader, with Aiden O’Brien’s Zoffany getting threateningly close, to stop the hearts of a million fans of Frankel. Frankel had to be ridden hard by Tom Queally in the final stages to hold on by three parts of a length.
