Royal Ascot 2011: Rewilding Defeats So You Think In a Thriller

Jan Vermeer set a scorching pace for the most celebrated So You Think after a sluggish start, in the Group 1, $655,660 Prince of Wales’s Stakes, on the second day at Royal Ascot. All was fine for half of the 1m 2f trip, with So You Think enjoying the pace. Half way left, Ryan Moore couldn’t stop the furious So You Think lobbying on the leader and took over the running 3f out in his usual cavalry charge, establishing a clear four lengths lead in the final 2f. Planteur and Twice Over tried to keep pace, but were unable to make up any ground on the new leader.

Ryan Moore looked confident till he found the shadow of Rewilding closing up and the forceful ride by Frankie Dettori spoilt the party of trainer Aidan O’Brien’s hero. The multi Group 1 winner So You Think was defeated by the Godolphin superstar Rewilding, a lightly-raced son of Tiger Hill, in the dying moments of the race. Mahmood Al Zarooni trains the winner, who will now head for the King George VI and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, back at Ascot in a month.

"It was a tremendous battle with two great horses”, Frankie Dettori said. “When I got past him (So You Think) it was a sheer joy. When you see two great horses battle it out like this it’s a sheer joy to be in a race like this.”

Rewilding was bred in England by Sir Andrew Lloyd-Webber's Watership Down Stud. He is out of the group I winning mare, Darara, and is also a half-brother to champions Diaghilev and Dariyoun.
