Rock Of Gibraltar’s Society Rock, second in the Gr 1 Golden Jubilee Stakes last year, came with a flourish at this year’s renewal, to win on the concluding day at Royal Ascot. The 25-1 outsider from the stables of James Fanshawe was ridden with great aplomb by Pat Cosgrave to deny Monsieur Chevalier the glory. Society Rock had to wriggle out of a tight situation inside the first furlong before settling off the pace over the mile trip. As the race got to a boil, 1f out, Society Rock sliced through the field with a blistering run to shoot past Australia’s Star Witness. Monsieur Chevalier finished on with a strong run towards the closing stages to beat Star Witness but found the winner stretch out by half a length.
Pat Cosgrave, who rode a marvellous race to pick up his first Royal meet winner, said, "I think a lot of people doubted this horse after his first two runs this year, but this was the target all along. In the last three weeks, he's been showing all the old Society Rock, and he showed just how good he is today. I jumped too well and it was a bit tight for the first furlong, but I got the splits at the right time and he picked up good. All Group 1s are nice, but it's nice to get a first Royal Ascot winner on the board, and I hope there are many more."
Ryan Moore and Aidan O’Brien combined to pull off a double through Maybe and Await the Dawn on the final day at the Ascot to be crowned with the top honours at the 2011 edition of the Royal Ascot. O’Brien finished with four wins, one ahead of Richard Hannon, while Ryan Moore tied with Richard Hughes at four each and was awarded the prestigious crown on the seconds’ standing. A humble Moore acknowledged, “I didn't win it - I really tied with Hughsie."
