The connection’s thoughtful resolution to bring in 3-year-old Nathaniel to race in the Gr1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at a cost of £75,000 paid rich dividends. Nathaniel emerged victorious amongst the quality line-up of five runners to give trainer John Gosden and Jockey William Buick their first win in the race. Tragedy struck when Rewilding broke down after turning for home and Frankie Dettorie being thrown off his mount. Rewilding had to be put to sleep thus bringing an end to Godolphin’s accomplished four-year-old. However, it was fortunate that Dettorie escaped unscathed.
Debussy set an ordinary pace after going ahead 2f from the start and Buick rode Nathaniel in check following the leader till the heads turned for home. Approaching the final 2f, Buick got busy on Nathaniel and the son of Galileo shot ahead and got even better towards the finish. The favourite Workforce was unable to get to the winner and placed second, while St Nicholas Abbey was third, a further 1 ¼ lengths behind.
“Winning the King George was a dream come true,” said Gosden and added, "It's been a wet week, we've been lucky to get the [good-to-soft] ground and he won well. He loves this track, and to finish in front of a horse like Workforce is everything. It was an intelligent ride by William and I left it completely up to him how to ride the race. He let him stride on, which was not ideal, but then again Workforce would have been better if they had gone a pace."
