Trainer M Eshwer leading Solmaz (S John Up), winner of The TV Reddy Memorial Trophy

Micheal Eshwar-trained Solmaz (Black Cash-Bon Sang) graduated into the winners circle in her only second attempt, winning The T.V. Reddy Memorial Trophy, the main race of Monday’s races at Mysore. Solmaz shared the favouritism with the more experienced Jeevika’s Queen but the latter was no match for Solmaz, who clearly outclassed the field. The filly jumped out well and jockey S. John preferred to settle her behind the front-running My Boy till the final bend. Racing into the last 400 metres, Solmaz made a smooth transition to head the field and stretched out clearly from the stable companion Caterina. Jeevika’s Queen finished third a further length and a half away.

Jockey S. John sparkled again, booting home a hat-trick. Earlier to Solmaz’s win, John had partnered Hidden Pleasures and Always For You to victory. Ranjeet Shinde-trained Hidden Pleasures (Tirol-Final Cut) was a chance mount to John, replacing J.H. Christopher and he did not let the opportunity slip out and showed his riding talent beating Freedom Fighter in front of the grand stand, in the higher division of The Nethravati Plate. Freedom Fighter led the field from the start and enjoyed a sizable lead of four lengths passing the distance marker. Hidden Pleasures devoured ground after coming out of the pack and got the nod at the wire. Chakravyuhabedak also followed Hidden Pleasures with a dash but finished a close third. Classy Don was withdrawn on veterinary grounds.

The top-weighted Always For You (International-Rainbow Vision) made it start to finish under S. John, in the lower division of The Manasasarovara Plate. Chief De Mission followed the winner throughout the race but could not get to the winner’s shadow and finished second. Trainer C.D. Monnappa, now popularly nick named as ‘seconds Monnappa’ by his tribe after finishing with the highest number of seconds this season, looked to be a relieved man after his ward won the race.

The most outstanding performance of the day turned out to be from Pratap Kamath-trained Bold Police (Brave Act-Traffic Police), who pulverized the opposition while justifying the short price, in the higher division of The Manasasarovara Plate. Muskaan was withdrawn on veterinary grounds near the gates and the field was reduced to eleven. The youngest in the field, at three years, Bold Police surged to take charge as they passed the 800 metres board and just toyed with the rest on the final straight. Red Dawn managed to finish second ahead of Native Strategy and Hampton Court.

Trainer M. Bobby successfully landed a double, scoring through Prettyyashyashvini in the opener and Tromos in the concluding race of the day. K.P.G. Appu had Prettyyashyashvini (Barood-Yashwyashvini) in front right from the start and warded off the strong moves of Hero’s Dominance, Arkwright and Heartofglory in the final 150 metres of The Girinagara Plate. The three put pressure on Prettyyashyashvini towards the closing stages, but Appu kept the momentum and had the mare going, to win by three parts of a length. Tromos (Steinbeck-Ammeter) scored a spectacular victory in The Gundlupet Plate. The 6-year-old was laid back towards the rear of the field till passing the 800 metres and made headway around the horses in front and with a strong gallop on the wide outside beat Time Flies close to the winning post. After a nowhere in his previous essay, Time Flies showed plenty of improvement to run prominently till beaten. A Run To Remember, who occupied Time Flies in a fight on the straight, finished third, ahead of Behram. The well-backed favourite Khwaish missed precious ground at the start and ran listless.

P.C. Tejaswi, with a relatively small string of horses at Mysore, took his seasons tally up by two more points. Mine Games (Ajaad-White Plains), who has won once out of six runs this season, picked up another victory, in The Bannerghatta Plate. Wimbeldon Star was the first to make the move on the straight and he led till the final furlong but failed to hold on from the fast-finishing Mine Games. My Musketeer tried to slip in along the rails but could not squeeze through the gap between the inner rails and Wimbeldon Star and finished third.

Tejaswi’s Queen Of Destiny (Balla Jidaa-Queen Of The World), a consistent performer this summer, picked up her second win of the season at the fag end of her career. Darling Dynamite had a two lengths lead on the straight and Queen Of Destiny, who was progressing gradually throughout the straight, got past the leader inside the last 100 metres and registered a notable win. The favourite Best Move was never in the hunt

Plaka was backed to the exclusion of the other runners in The Kemmannugundi Plate but the rider Keanen Steyn had no answer when the friendless Breezo (Hymn-Colonel’s Dream) from Rakesh’s yard charged along the inner ground in the final furlong. Plaka had hit the front with a swift move on entering the home straight and Breezo, who was just on her haunches, changed course to challenge on the inside and with jockey Shanta Kumar riding out vigorously upset the applecart of Plaka in the shadow of the winning post
