The Group 1 Oipco Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood had all the pre-race hype that pointed at a needle-edge straight fight between Sir Henry Cecil-trained Frankel and Richard Hannon’s Canford Cliffs. Canford Cliffs, last year’s winner of the Sussex, was hoping for an encore but his dream was shattered when Frankel trounced his main rival with surprising ease, romping home to an astounding eight-in-a-row unbeaten stretch.
Frankel won in a clinical fashion, racing in the front soon on start over the mile trip. He settled beautifully and found his rhythm from stride one. When jockey Tom Queally gave him the signal to launch into the final attack, the classy son of Galileo produced a stunning gallop to leave the rest flat-footed. Canford Cliffs hung out under pressure and finished a whopping five lengths behind the winner, reducing all pre-race build-up to a damp squib.
"He's the best horse I have ever sat on and the best I have ever seen,” said Queally, who has partnered Frankel in all of his eight victories.
"I did think he could win very easily, but I wanted to let him do the talking and I did respect the second horse an awful lot," trainer Sir Henry Cecil, who is winning this race for a record sixth time, commented. "I think he's one of the best I've ever seen."
