Kevin Prendergast-trainee La Collina breezed past the favourite Power, to lift the Group 1 Keeneland Phoenix Stakes, a six-furlong scurry for two-year-old colts and fillies, at the Curragh on Sunday. The daughter of Strategic Prince, with only a maiden win to her credit prior to the Phoenix, went into the race at a liberal 33-1, while Aidan O’Brien, who has a mighty hold on the race, having won 11 of the last 13 running had his colt, Power, as the race favourite at 7-4. The manner in which La Collina won the race speaks high of her ability to accelerate. The early pace was strong and La Collina braced the rear early on and improved to be fourth 2f out. Jockey Declan McDonough had to weave his way through the traffic when the race got to a boil inside the final furlong and flashed on with tremendous turn of foot to get the favourite, Power, in the shadow of the winning post.
"I got outpaced early, so I just let her find her feet and although I met a bit of traffic at halfway I was lucky, as I never really got stopped. When I switched her out, I got a clear run and going down the inside at the end was the winning of it. She's all heart and if you don't have temperament, you have nothing and she has it in abundance," said jockey Declan McDonough.
La Collina was bred in Ireland by Manister House Stud, and is owned by Joerg Vasicek.
