George Strawbridge’s Moonlight Cloud by Invincible Spirit displayed dazzling speed with a touch of genuine class as she packed off her rivals over the shorter sprint (6 1/2f) with absolute authority to clinch the Prix Maurice de Gheest – Goldikova (Fr-G1), leaving no chance to any of her rivals even to raise a fight. Taking on a dozen rivals, jockey Thierry Jarnet was unperturbed even as Moonlight Cloud was at the rear end of the field. He nurtured her to a good rhythm and in the final stages of the race, he shifted gears and the filly’s response was instant and awesome. She covered ground zestfully and surged past Society Rock effortlessly and looked the winner with a lot still to travel. Her fiery gallop took her away from the rest and in split seconds shot into an unassailable lead, eventually winning by four lengths.
Moonlight Cloud’s stretch-run was sheer brilliance and none in the fray could match up for a worthy challenge at any stage, favourite Dream Ahead included! Moonlight Cloud was far too superior and she proved it. Speed is her forte and she displayed that with dazzle and conviction. Her Guineas attempt may now be forgiven as she clearly proved that she is best over the shorter sprints.
"I was really disappointed that she ran a bad race in the Guineas, as I always said she was a top-class filly and I never lost faith in her," trainer Freddy Head commented. "She is obviously better over a shorter trip, as she settles better in a fast-run race and can quicken brilliantly. She is very straightforward and just top-class."
