Immortal Verse deprived the wonder mare Goldikova her 15th Group 1 title, when the three-year-old daughter of Pivotal stormed home victorious, in the Group 1 Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville, France. Goldikova turned up as the favourite at 3 to 5, after her 14th Group 1 success in the Rothschild at Deauville just a fortnight ago, while the Coronation Stakes victor at the Royal Ascot, Immortal Verse went into the race at 19 to 1. Polemique and Flash Dance abided by the task given to them and set a true pace to their esteemed stablemate Goldikova, who preferred to sit in the rear after taking the start from 11 draw. Approaching the last two furlongs, Goldikova was switched outside and made headway but came under pressure when Gerald Mosse guided Immortal Verse to maintain a straight course after the filly drifted out in the final furlong and traversed smoothly to ease up close home. Sahpresa, a 6-year-old mare who won Group 1 races in England in 2009 and 2010, finished third, giving fillies and mares a sweep of the first three positions.
"She (Immortal Verse) had a little problem after the Coronation at Ascot as she fell in the yard and had to miss the Rothschild. This filly is out of the ordinary and she’s entered in all the top events, including the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes,” said trainer Robert Collet.
Mosse added: “Full marks to Robert Collet. He said after Ascot she’d win the Marois. She worked very well before the race but it was difficult to believe before the race that we could beat a great filly like Goldikova and she won so easily, with plenty in hand. She just needed four strides before dominating the race.”
Immortal Verse is owned by Richard Strauss and bred at Kilfrush Stud.
