A Jubilant One-Two for Juddmonte in the International Stakes

The Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes at York had eluded owner-breeder Khalid Abdullah for 22 years. Under the banner of his Juddmonte stud operation, the Saudi prince has been sponsoring the race since 1989, but had failed to win the contest in numerous attempts. Now the 2011 renewal has made up for all that, with his silks making it a thumping one-two. Twice Over by Observatory finished three-quarters of a length ahead of stable companion Midday. Windsor Palace, on a mission, broke away from the field to set a true pace to stable companion Await The Dawn, who was an odds-on favourite in the race. Racing inside the final furlong, the leader packed up and Await The Dawn led briefly with Sir Henry Cecil's duo, Midday and Twice Over joining the fight. Midday went ahead but drifted in, while jockey Ian Mongan kept a straight course on Twice Over and travelled better towards the finish, to score over the younger stablemate. For the record, this was Sir Henry’s third International victory while this was a first major triumph for jockey Ian Mongan.
Mongan said: "That was really special; I have to say a big thank you to both Mr Cecil and the Prince [Khalid Abdullah]… to be a part of this is just brilliant. I didn't think we went that quick and perhaps Midday and Twice Over just have that turn of foot, he's a true champion.”
