British lady rider Hayley Turner picked up her second Group 1 triumph of the season, riding trainer Michael Bells three-year-old filly, Margot Did to a surprise win in the Group 1 Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes at York. Turner was the second woman to have won a Group 1 race in Great Britain, when she captured the July Cup on Dream Ahead a month ago, and now she is the first to win two. Margot Did by Exceed and Excel was a clear three-quarters of a length ahead of Hamish McGonagall at the finish but the victory did not come as easy as Dream Ahead’s for Turner and she had to put all in her to pull off the victory. Having partnered Margot Did in all her 13 runs, Turner had the filly prominent towards the stands’ side and rode out strongly in the final furlong to beat Hamish McGonagall. Prohibit finished third half a length adrift on the far side.
Exuberant over her Group 1 success, Turner said, "I can't believe it. I have had the best season ever and I am just overwhelmed by it all. It just goes to show that if you are good enough and you work hard it can be done now." Commending trainer Bell for having faith in her ability, she added: "Everyone asks me if it is difficult getting going being a girl but I think it was probably more difficult for him to push the owners to put me on the horses.”
