Royal Delta Turns the Table in Alabama Stakes

Changed tactics by the connections of Royal Delta turned the tables in her favour, and the filly emerged a scintillating winner in the $500,000 TVG Alabama Stakes (Group 1) at Saratoga Race Course. Royal Delta had finished third behind It’s Tricky and Plum Pretty when they met last, in the Group 1 Coaching Club American Oaks four weeks ago, where the filly was raced off the pace and given a daunting task in the final stages. This time around, Jose Lezcano settled Royal Delta to a nicety in third, while Plum Pretty led the field with It’s Tricky in tow, till the last 2½ furlongs of the 1¼ mile dirt trip. It’s Tricky moved over to head but that was momentary as Royal Delta showed plenty of speed when Jose Lezcano urged her and Empire Maker’s filly sped past to vanquish the field with plenty on hand.

"Today the plan was to lay closer and let her find her stride, and she was able to do that. She was really comfortable. Jose did a great job, and she had plenty left. It's a matter of her relaxing and conserving energy for the final run, which she didn't do the time before," said the Hall of Fame trainer William I Mott. He added: "I think she's a filly that seems to do anything. She will run over any surface. She has won on the synthetics, won a Grade 1 on the dirt, and has worked well over the grass. Our options are always open [with her], but there is nothing like a good old-fashioned dirt race like the Alabama."

Kentucky-bred Royal Delta, who is out of multiple graded stakes winner Delta Princess, by A.P. Indy, is a homebred campaigned by the estate of the late Prince Saud bin Khaled, who died in late January.
