Montjeu’s Masked Marvel burst ahead in the last 1 ½ furlongs on the long straight at Doncaster to pull off a sensational victory in the G1 Ladbrokes St.Leger. John Gosden trained colt showed tremendous grit and stamina to set the track scorching en-route to setting a new course record timing of 3m 00.44 secs. John Gosden and William Buick pulled off a back-to-back success in the Leger, having won the race last year on Arctic Cosmos. Gosden, who is saddling his fourth winner of the longest classic said,” From the day I saw him at the Deauville sales I thought he could be a Leger horse. He's done nothing wrong all his life, he ran very well at Goodwood, and then Epsom [in the Derby] confused him. Mr [Bjorn] Nielsen allowed me to back off him and bring him back fresh and this has been the plan for about two years."

The pace set by the stable companion Buthelezi was so fierce that many like Brown Panther, Blue Bunting and Genius Beast felt the heat and were ridden flat out in the early part of the race. As heads turned towards the long straight at Doncaster, Seville was the first to take the initiative but could not hold on there for long as Masked Marvel broke clear inside the final 1 ½ furlongs and quickened to stretch away from Brown Panther on whom Fallon was giving his best. The favourite Sea Moon finished third half a length adrift.

Masked Marvel is owned by Bjorn Nielsen and bred at the Newsells Park Stud.
