Marju’s Lightening Pearl justified her connections’ decision to get her to run the G1 Jaguar Cars Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket, by shelling out an extra cost of £15000. Lightening Pearl won the race with ease to give her trainer Ger Lyons and owner Sheikh Fahad Bin Abdulla Al Thani their first Group 1 success. Johnny Murtagh settled the 3- 1 second favourite Lightening Pearl behind the leader Sajwah, till the last two furlongs and shot ahead with a strong run to move clear and stay ahead by half a length from Sunday Times, who found it hard to get to the winner. The winner had more on hand and the victory was much easier than the verdict suggested. The favourite Best Terms finished fifth despite the best efforts of Richard Hughes while Sajwah, who ran prominently till the last 2 furlongs had to be put down after breaking her pelvis during the race.

"From day one I always knew she was good. She won her maiden well and maybe the key was running over six furlongs. I always thought she was a mile seven-furlong filly, but she had the race won a long way out", said jockey Johnny Murtagh.

"We thought this horse could be special," trainer Lyons commented. "It was a no-brainer to supplement her and the 1000 Guineas is the plan--at the moment I'd say it's likely she'll now go into winter quarters."
