Taking as a challenge after missing out an opportunity to compete in the Champion Sprinters Cup due to jockey's fault of using wrong saddle, Moongate Man claimed the Royal Western India Turf Club Cup, which was earmarked for the class one horses at the Delhi races on Monday. Trainer Magan Singh was the lone professional to earn a double.

Six furlongs has never been a suitable distance for the grey Moongate Man. As most of his victories have come over either five or over five-and-a-half furlongs. He was unlucky to put his best foot forward when his shoe came off during one of his races over 1,200m recently.

In the field of six horses, the son of Steinbeck and Stream of Love was quickest of the block but was held back to sit third behind Lilly and owner mate Ode To Nature till the final furlong. As the former started huffing and puffing, he and his stablemate Ode To Nature went for a duel before Shocking Star tried to poke through. The grey gelding quickened to have his bedridden trainer Deepak Kalra heave a sigh of relief by staving off the late challenge of Ka Ching, who should score over the mile.

Shocking Star, who was handled poorly, finished third. Though, the jockey of the filly (Shocking Star) raised an objection against Moongate Man for hampering her way but bore no fruit. Ode To Nature, who ran fourth, is knocking at the door. Enya bears watching.

Ishwar Singh Parmar-trained Kohinoor Empire registered yet another surprising win in the day's opener, the Mumbai Plate. Available at nourishing odds, the bay gelding of Conquering Hero and Angel Face showed a power of acceleration inside the distance to pip Saira. The gelding has the stamina to even score over the longer trip. Saira should make amends. Fiorella finished late ahead of the favourite Beyond Imagination, who ran below par. The run should be ignored.

Magan Singh-Flying Majesty emerged an impressive winner by making every post a winning one in the upper division of the Mahalakshmi Plate. The filly of Ansbach and Majestic Bay should complete an encore. The lower division of the event was at the mercy of Grey dancer, who is also saddled by Magan Singh. Roaming Fame, who finished second, should soon meet with success.

Syed Mazhar Abbas's Courage Under Fire proved his superiority despite carrying a heavy impost of 61.5 kilos in the Haji Ali Plate. Bharat T Singh's trainee Hatch back shed his maiden status in start-to-finish bid in the gateway of India Plate. Fuel, which was handled injudiciously, finished close second ahead of Burbank.
