Buena Vista Triumphs in the Japan Cup

Japan’s champion mare Buena Vista by Special Week was ridden in splendid fashion by Yasuvari Iwata to win the prestigious G1 Japan Cup at Tokyo. Buena Vista had won the race last year but lost it in the steward’s room. Wiping off the dreadful memories of the race, the victory was even sweeter for the 'horse of the season', as she beat the PRIX de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Danedream.

Buena Vista racing in midfield for most part of the twelve furlongs trip made her move approaching the last two furlongs and challenged Tosen Jorden through the final 200 m to surge ahead by a neck, close to the finish, to a thunderous applaud from the Tokyo crowd. Danedream, a bit slow on start was held back towards the rear and moved forward passing the back stretch. Danedream ran on in the last furlong but the task was a tall one and the Arc winner failed to reproduce her signature acceleration and finished sixth.

"I was determined to show that Buena Vista is really the very best in Japan. I just kept believing in her exceptional power while dueling with Tosen Jordan at the stretch and urged her on, to which she really responded well said the rider Iwata.

Trainer Hiroyoshi Matsuda added,"I knew she was the best. I always believed in her."
