Celandine Produced A Special Set of Siblings

We continue with our list of non-performing mares who went on to become superlative dams. Celandine was one such dam who did not even race but produced a long list of 10 winners led by the pair of siblings Camino and Camineto. The brother and sister duo were sired by the inimitable Grey Gaston.
Celandine was a fashionable bred mare by Roan Rocket out of Couloir. The latter produced eight winners in England and was the grand dam of some Calcutta-based runners such as Spats Colombo, Cool Hand Luke and Sweet Relation. Surely, those names ring a bell for Calcutta punters of the seventies and eighties.
Camino was Celandine's priceless product. In the care of maestro Rashid Byramji, he notched up 13 wins from 15 starts – an enviable record by any standards. Camino's conquests included the Bangalore Derby, The Indian 2000 Guineas and the President of India Gold Cup. The colt was the pride of South India and responded marvellously to the touch of saddle artist Vasant Shinde. Unfortunately, he passed away at the early age of four.
His full-sister Camineto was another brilliant performer with seven wins to her credit. She too won the Bangalore Derby and the Bangalore 1000 Guineas and picked up the RWITC Invitational Cup as well.
Others who did the Celandine line proud were Own Ordain (6 wins), Corrento De Ouro (5 wins) and Celtic Lady (4 wins).
