The Stewards of RCTC, in an effort to alleviate some of the difficulties being faced by owners having horses stationed in Calcutta, have decided to advance to them the maintenance costs for the months of November and December. Further, all treatment for horses affected by the 'Pyrexia of unknown origin' (PUO) rendered directly by the Club's veterinary officers will not be charged to the respective owners. Those charges directly related to PUO will be borne by the Club.

The chairman of the Stewards, Cyrus Madan, also confirmed that the horses will be permitted to work in moderation from November 21. “If the horses react eagerly, we ought to be able to kick off the winter meet by the third week of December. It all depends on the protagonists of the game - the horses," he said.

"The first few days, we have to monitor them carefully on the tracks, if they respond well, then we have an early start to look forward to" he added.

Thankfully, there has been no mortality and the temperatures of most of the affected horses are back to normal.

So, all you lovers of thoroughbreds and horse racing, keep your fingers crossed for a mid-December start to the season. There's no harm in being a little optimistic, is there.
