A Small Filly With A Big Heart

By Pearcey | 14 Jun 2009 | BANGALORE

Jacqueline

For the second year in a row, The Bangalore Fillies Trial Stakes was won by the powerful combination of Pesi Shroff and Malesh Narredu. After Set Alight last year, it was the turn of Jacqueline (King Charlemagne-Talita Kimi) to wear the fillies crown in the 2009 edition of this race. Fourteen well performed fillies had accepted to face the starter. With Astral Flash picking up a stone during her morning workouts, only thirteen were sighted in the paddock. The betting was cornered by the three big guns in this race. Gypsy Magic, Captivating and Jacqueline were considered superior to the rest. Gypsy Magic had been unfortunate to lose The Poonawalla Multimillion. She had veered out in that race, traversed much longer than the official seven furlongs, finished on the outermost part of the race track and yet lost by less than a length. In the opinion of most experts, she had only to travel straight to win Sunday's feature. Jacqueline had shocked a maidens set in her first start, before running a neck behind Gypsy Magic in the above mentioned event. She had been sharpened in a mock race to prepare her for her third career start. Captivating was the highest rated filly in this set,and had won four times including once over the metric mile. With Gypsy Magic looking absolutely superb in the parade ring, there was no stopping the punters, who slammed her down to even-money favouritism. No-hopers Aphrodisiac and Mystic Quest took them along at a brisk pace ahead of Captivating, while the rest followed in close order as they traversed the first half of the race. Malesh Narredu and Jacqueline were drawn the widest of the lot. He lost no time in bringing her in ,and tucking her up in the middle of a tightly packed field. Gypsy Magic was drawn well, but she lacked early speed. Wayne Smith was dismayed to find himself in last position. He was perhaps double minded at that moment. He had to decide what he wanted to do. He could either wait for a while ,or pull her out and improve his position. He decided to do the latter, and began moving up towards the front-runners. It was Captivating who brought them into view, and had a slender advantage over Mystic Quest on the rails. Gypsy Magic swung the widest of all , and was making a huge impression on the scene. But it was Jacqueline who was moving the best of the lot . Malesh put her in top gear at this stage ,and her response was immediate. She came through the pack, picked up the front runners one by one , and strode away for an impressive victory. Gypsy Magic could only get up in the last few metres to take the second spot ahead of Mystic Quest and a tired Captivating. The big surprise in this race was the run of Mystic Quest. She had been running over sprints in all her starts. Todays performance indicated her prowess over a galloping trip. Jacqueline's victory delighted her connections. Pesi Shroff spoke to indiarace soon after the race and said that " Both Jacqueline and Astral Flash have tremendous capabilities. It was difficult to separate them on the track .I had brought them to Bangalore with a hope that they would do well for the stable. The fillies had loved the local climate and progressed remarkably in the last few weeks. Much that I am delighted with today's victory, I am dismayed that Astral Flash could not participate". A beaming Malesh Narredu was the man of the moment. He has tremendous big race temperament, and it is a treat to watch him in motion. He is able to extract the best from a responsive horse, and his ride on Jacqueline was one such example. Malesh was more forthright in his views about today's race. He said " Jacqueline is a small filly with a big heart. She displayed all round abilities while handling the mile today. She settled beautifully, relaxed nicely and responded powerfully. I realized that she was going to win even before we entered the last furlong of todays race. The others were floundering under pressure, while she was getting stronger. She came from behind ,and went past Gypsy Magic easily.Jacqueline shall definitely get the Derby trip and "God Willing", that shall be her next start. I am waiting to see the champion colt Aboline in action next week. He is the one that everybody has to beat in the big race of the season" Sunday racing was kind to the punters. Two strongly fancied runners owned by Dr Vijay Mallya, posted impressive victories in their respective events. Both were ridden with supreme confidence by champion jockey Suraj Narredu. Padmanabhan trained Celestial Way showed a clean pair of heels to Gold Crown and Portobello. She won from end-to-end ,and confirmed that she is destined to go much higher in the future. Attaolahi's Sans Pareil looked a different filly today. She had won a maidens event last month, and was reappearing today in Class III. She was looking well filled out, more relaxed and sported a fine coat. She ran according to expectations and won as she liked. There was smart money on Rugged Beauty, but that went down without a fuss. Rugged Beauty and Coorg Honey finished way behind the winner. The other big performance during the day came from P S Chouhan. This youngster has been riding with a lot of confidence and scoring with regularity. He had a couple of well supported winners during the afternoon. He set the trend for the day by romping home on Amit Caddy's Royal Legend. The three year old was supported with confidence in a Class V race. Chouhan found his mount lacking early pace, and knowing the habits and capabilities of the favourite, allowed him to run in mid group till straightening for home. He pushed him therafter, pulled out the stick and drove him relentlessly. Royal Legend galloped away for an easy victory ahead of Senna. His other win came astride Neil Darashah's Rashida. Neil wasn't able to comprehend Rashida's run last month ,and insisted that she should be given another chance . He had immense confidence in her abilities, and the filly justified her trainers optimism. Rashida tracked Miss Everywhere till the distance post before Chouhan asked her to quicken. She got up in the last few strides to claim the honours. Imran Chisty blotted his copybook by riding an indifferent race on Miss Everywhere. The only outsider to win today was Darius trained Afea. In a class II sprint, the five year old found himself in front at the winning post. The race could easily be termed as the "Handicappers Delight". The first seven horses finished within two lengths of each other.Fancied Just In Time, In The Zone and Edmondo finished off the board. The result was such a shock, that all the pools including the exacta and trinella went unsolved.Spiritofexcellce and The Contender were able to save place money. Trainer Samar Singh has been going through a lean phase in recent times. Noble Sacrifice gave him his first winner of the season. The filly won a maidens race over seven furlongs. She had strong credentials to win this event. She had finished second to Gypsy Magic in one of her starts. The presence of rookie Shadab Khan in the saddle dissuaded many from supporting her today. Noble Sacrifice ran according to all known form She made all the running and proved to be too powerful for the rest. Leave It To Me came with a late bid and took the second spot. The runner-up seems to be one paced and should relish a longer trip. Favourite Step In Style ran pathetically and finished in the ruck. He should be left alone from a betting perspective during the remainder of this season. The day ended with a popular victory for another favourite from Neil's yard. This time it was the turn of Dream Park. The small made filly was carrying the top weight in a scurry for horses in class IV. The trainer decided to lessen her burden by declaring apprentice Vijay to guide her fortunes. The decision proved to be perfect, as Dream Park came with giant strides from mid-division, and lowered the colours of Jia Yoh Jia Yoh and Above The Line. The placed horses live to fight another day, as they are more than capable of winning a similar race in the coming weeks.
