Firezone

Trainer Irfan Ghatala had a huge reason to smile after Firezone cantered away with The Civil Service Cup at the Bangalaore races on Saturday. The four year old lived up to his fine paddock looks by running maturely in the day's feature. Firezone was one amongst the four younger horses entered in this Class I handicap over seven furlongs. Firezone, Salsera and Spark Of Gold had won two races each in the recently concluded Winter Season, and advanced to this Class. Star Wave had won The Mysore 1000 Guineas and lost form thereafter. Irfan had been enthused by the manner in which Fire zone had progressed, and therefore, decided to campaign him in the Indian 2000 Guineas at Mumbai. He had put up a good show in that race, by finishing in the middle of a group of some of the best horses in the country. A mock race last week had sharpened him ,and got Firezone ready for his first attempt at winning a race in the highest Class at this centre. He was backed with supreme confidence, and installed at the top of the betting boards ahead of Star Wave, Salsera and Spark Of Gold. Imran Chisty was a bit nervous as Firezone began to play up after being stalled. His innermost draw made it absolutely neccessay for him to take a smart jump. The favourite took off a bit hesitantly and soon found himself in the midddle of a closely packed field. Welcome Back, Salsera, Spark Of Gold and Star Wave were at the helm of affairs, as the runners straightened for home. Imran and Firezone ambled along nicely, and were yet to make a move. Suraj pushed Salsera to take over the running at this stage, and after a brief duel, managed to shake off a challenge posed by Star Wave. In the meanwhile, Firezone was brought through the middle , and asked to quicken. The response was immediate and electrifying. Like all brilliant horses, Firezone lengthened his strides and strode away from Salsera. Star Wave and Spark Of Gold plodded-on to fill the rest of the frame. With this performance, Firezone has joined an elite group of horses. His high rating may see him being campaigned in the terms races framed during the remainder of the season. He will find himself at the lower end of that scale, and in his current form, will be a strong force upto a mile. The other noteworthy performance during the afternoon came from trainer Dhariwal. By saddling a treble today, the unassuming professional went to the top of the trainer's tally. While Cayenne and Scramjet recieved good support in the betting ring, Sunny Gold was the longest priced winner of the day. Scramjet set the ball rolling by posting a pillar to post victory over favourite Man United. His job was made easier by the fact that Man United was reported to have gone lame during the running of this race. Apprentice Parmar rode a good balanced race on the winner. Sunny Gold sailed past fancied Caprioska, and gave Frenchman Breux his third winner of the season. Caprioska's start to finish mission petered out in the last hundred metres of this race. Caprioska is the highest rated maiden at Bangalore. He has been unfortunate to run into some good horses in his short career. Even-money Cayenne completed the treble for Dhariwal. Being prominent for most of the way, Cayenne took command of the situation near the final bend. Suraj rode her hands and heels thereafter to withstand the late challenge from Nox. Talisker came purposefully at the end to finish a close third. Blushing Beam broke down in this race and returned riderless to the unsaddling enclosure. Two sparkling performances from Padmanabhan's Reaping Reward and Darius Byramji's Ticket To Ride saw these youngsters winning the two divisions of a maiden's event framed during the afternoon. Both won in almost identical fashion, as they ran away from their hapless rivals, and checked-in almost a distance clear of the rest. They clocked similar timings ,and were available at identical odds of 65/100 with the bookmakers. It would have been truly exciting ,if only, the handicapper had slotted them in the same division of this race. Reaping Reward and Ticket To Ride are capable of repeating in open handicap company. Youngster Tharun led-in his second winner in as many weeks, when Retro Queen won by a nose from Neel Gagan. This incidentally gave Imran Chisty his double for the day. The two horses raced alongside for the entire stretch of the straight. They came close to each other on a couple of occasions, but that wasn't enough for the Stewards to uphold an objection raised by the rider of Neel Gagan. His charge lacked conviction, and was thrown out in quick time. The day ended with another popular runner holding on to her early lead and skipping clear of the rest. Lokanath's Imperial Applause recieved good support to start as a joint favourite alongside Eshwer's Testarosa. The latter had let down her followers on numerous occasions, and this was perhaps her last chance to redeem herself. Testarosa ran another insipid race, and despite Suraj's best efforts, finished at the rear end of this field. On the other hand, apprentice Sreekanth rode a near perfect race on Imperial applause. The speedy filly was held in check till the bend before being asked for an effort. She made all the running thereafter to win comfortably from Great Chieftain and a dicky legged Kemrock.
