California Memory (USA) raised a flashy spurt in the last 100 yards to win the 2011 edition of the G1 Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Cup from the fate finishing 2010 runner-up Irian. The even money favourite Ambitious Dragon (NZ) was a bit slow at start and raced off the pace till making headway 2 furlongs out. California Memory getting a good kick off from the gates stalked the leading pair of Pure Champion (Ire) and Footstepsinthesand (GB). Turning for the final assault Ambitious Dragon moved around the field to make headway even as Zazou (Ger) took charge in the final furlong. California Memory was all the way looking for a split along the rails and when he finally did Jockey Mathew Chadwick went for the gap between horses and sliced through to emerge victorious. Irian rallied late to finish as this year’s runner-up ahead of Zazou and Ambitious Dragon.
"I haven't been around that long, but he's the best horse I've ridden, and the biggest win of my career," said an enthusiastic Chadwick. Tony Cruz who trains the winner said: "This is the race you want to win. I'm lucky to train a horse like him and there are bigger things to come. He will be going for all the big local races but I would also like to go to Singapore and Dubai."
