Triumphant Ashwa Jugnoo Saves the day

By Parjanya | 27 Dec 2011 | DELHI

As expected, Ashwa Jugnoo made merry of the counterparts in the Juvenile Cup, the main event at the Delhi races on Tuesday. Incidentally, he was the lone favourite to save the day. Jockeys K P G Appu, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat & trainers Roopendra Singh Shekhawat and Mohsin Khan were the successful professionals to share a brace each.

RS Shekhawat-trained Ashwa Jugnoo, who ran fifth to Marhaba in the Delhi Race Club Bookmakers Association Million recently, had to face a mediocre set over the similar distance. The dark bay son of Ikhtyar and Glowing Sands was quickest out of the block and had no problem in dealing with the other eight youngsters, while making every post a winning one. Master Messi occupied the runner-up berth ahead of the owner mate Master Source and Rios Girl. Master Messi should make amends. Crusoe, who ran fifth and Creek Wood bear watching.

Gajendra, who earlier rode Ashwa Jugnoo, and his paternal uncle Roopendra got united in the Cold Weather Plate and had their back to back double through Ashwa Prisha in the similar manner over seven furlongs. Interestingly, the daughter of Burdon of Proof and Exotic Fantasy was never able to meet with success over the longer trip. The favourite Ho Chi once again failed to live upto expectations and was even observed to be hanging-in in the last 200m finishing second ahead of the late galloper Graceful Bay, who should score over the mile.

Earlier, visiting jockey K P G Appu, who was familiar with the track as he had scored several wins few years ago, worked quickly on the starter's order and put S Nawab's Unicorn into top gear to register an emphatic victory in the upper division of the Santa Claus Plate, which was the opening event of the day. Bottom weighted Harsh Vaibhav pipped Sunny Chinoy-ridden Silver Flames for the next best slot. The run of the market mover Dazzle and Sunrise is best ignored.

Zulfiqar Khan's trained Mystic Miracle stunned the field in the lower division of the Santa Claus Plate. Coming from the eight positions, he caught up with The Praetorian and Neko inside the distance post to win on the bit. Sultan Ayubi, who ran fourth after leading the way till the crucial stages of the event, is knocking at the door.

Rajinder-saddled The Mafia left the field dancing to his tune over the eight furlongs' Christmas Tree Plate. The chestnut gelding of Ontario and Ordina, who had recorded a decisive win under the guidance of C Rajendra on Friday over six furlongs, was ably handled by the young apprentice Bhanu Pratap Singh. Running fourth behind the stablemate pacemaker Spot Hit, Ashwa Prabha and the public fancied Don’t You Dare till the top of the home straight, he dominated the last furlong. He should complete a hat-trick. Devputra turned out to be an impressive runner finishing late second ahead of Don't You Dare.

The last two events, which were the senior and junior division of the Christmas Cup, of the day were at the mercy of the Mohsin Khan's yard Dancing Beauty and Dancing Babe respectively. Both were in the pillar-to-post affair. The former was ridden by Saleem, whereas, Appu had to sweat out on the latter in a close finish against Warrior Race, who should soon raise a winning gallop.
