Milan records yet another impressive win

By Sharan Kumar | 09 Mar 2002 | BANGALORE

Milan( K.P.G.Appu up), winner of the Karnataka Trophy being led in by trainer Z.Darashah and owner Farooq Rattonsey

Zareer Darashah trained Milan’s victory in the Karnataka Trophy, a terms for three year olds which featured Saturday’s races, was indeed creditable because the son of Tiajuana showed tremendous improvement over his previous run where he had beaten the likes of Slovania. Now the latter was favoured by the terms of the race but while Slovania apparently did not make any improvement on her previous run, Milan’s progress indeed was impressive as he left the field for dead well before the final furlong.

Allespagne was also fancied to win but the daughter of Easter Sunday cleared did not relish the extended trip of seven furlongs. After showing up prominently at the top of the straight, the three-year old filly weakened to finish a faraway second. Interestingly, the dam of Allespagne, Easter Sunday, in her career, barely managed to last out the six furlong trip and in fact, she was twice involved in a dead heat after leading all the way but slackening completely in the shadow of the post.

Jockey Appu is more at home when he is up front. At least his trainer is when his jockey and his ward are prominently positioned at the front. This strategy has also helped quite often because of the reluctance of the others behind to let go of their mounts. Like it happened in the first race when So Supreme won at the expense of Nationalistic whose

jockey got into his act when the front-runner was safely ahead. Milan hit the front from the word `go’ and then stretched away from Allespagne to win as a he pleased to claim the rich terms race in great fashion. Slovania was a poor third.

Trainer Rashid Byramji led in his first winner from his current lot of three-year olds through Castle Park who won the March Plate (Div I) quite capably. The filly has a bright future. By Diffident who is the current rage among the new stallions in India, the filly has inherited lot of speed from her sire. Castle Park has an influence of stamina as well as her dam Mystic Memory showed her mettle over trip up to St Leger. The lower division of the race saw a controversial ride by jockey Prakash on Nationalistic that resulted in Darashah getting a race by default on So Supreme. After taking a rather lethargic start, Nationalistic was brought 10 horses wide into the straight and then ducked towards the rails, cutting an erratic course and then finished full of running to be an eye-catching second. It was indeed a below par performance by jockey Prakash who reportedly explained that the reason for him coming wide all the way was that he was gaining places on the front runners! Prakash is known to give a smooth ride to his horses and he moves through the field and his explanation that he was improving his position in the manner he did was indeed surprising. One has to take his explanation with a pinch of salt unless of course this is one of the repertoires that he has added in recent times! Whether the three-year old had sore shins or bad mouth is a matter for the professionals to bother about but the drifting odds on the horse had its own tale to tell.

The chances of Extreme Contact winning the Arundati Cup, the supporting event of the day, was further enhanced by her jockey Ramesh claiming an allowance of 3.5 kgs. The daughter of Conquering Hero put in a sparkling run in the homestretch to down the front-running Grisogono in the shadow of the post. This was the fourth win recorded by Extreme Contact during the season who has been a model of consistency.

Jockey Pesi Shroff who guided Castle Park to an easy win, had earlier recorded a double through trainer Padmanabhan’s wards. Supermax had the measure of the opposition quite competently in the 1600 metres Thirthahalli Plate, staving off the challenge of Dancing Phantom but Tresorie whose last it was in Bangalore, had to be fully stretched to contain Aalassio who put up a stiff resistance.
