Bold Chieftan wins in great style

By Sharan Kumar | 09 Jun 2002 | BANGALORE

Bold Chieftan (B.Prakash up), winner of the Chief Ministers Cup being led in by trainer S.Ganapathy

Five-year old Bold Chieftan appears to be in great nick. The son of Placerville decimated a quality opposition en route to brilliant win in the Gr 3 Chief Minister's Cup, the star event of Sunday. The stylish manner in which Bold Chieftan only served to confirm the fact that his finishing ahead of the more celebrated Snow Dew in his last essay was no flash in the pan. Bold Chieftan had the race at his mercy from the word `go' and had plenty to spare when finishing clear of a late-finishing Adamile.

The best-performed runners in the fray thus took the first two spots. Adamile, winner of the Super Mile at Chennai last year, showed a welcome return to form after a couple of listless runs during the winter season. Adamile seems to have overcome whatever problem affected her winning more races than she has done thus far. Now that she has struck form, the talented five-year old race mare can be expected to strike over slightly extended trips for the sprint is bound to prove sharp for her unless she is taking on inferior opposition.

Bold Chieftan was the firm favourite to win on the basis of his last brilliant effort over an extended trip. Top Gun and Vivid Dreams who had some form to go by, were next in demand, with Adamile neglected in the betting ring but attracting only `smart' money. Jockey Prakash on Bold Chieftan hit the front as soon as the starter dispatched the field and was never headed. He cantered into the straight while the rest of the runners were already off the bridle and checked in home untroubled. The late finishing dash of Adamile from the rear only served to provide some artificial excitement. Top Gun once again got the better of stablemate Vivid Dreams.

Zareer Darashah trained Just Brave, despite having to concede weight all round, was the favourite to win the 1400 metres Y Ramachandra Memorial Plate. Just Brave had acquitted himself well against superior opposition and as such, he was expected to defy the heavy impost. Cut Time who was in receipt of 12 kgs from the favourite came in for sustained support as the race time approached. Jockey Appu on Just Brave rode a race which was unlike him, trying to settle the favourite in midfield and in the process getting knocked around by a couple of runners. In the event, he had t bring his mount on the wide outside but with Cut Time cutting an erratic course and Steinlein too shifting out as a result, Just Brave was denied of a clear run. Just Brave pipped Steinlein for the second spot while the advantageously placed Cut Time, despite shifting out of a straight course, won quite well. Since Cut Time was clear of the others when cutting an erratic path, there was no objection but if Steinlein had finished second best, there could have been an unsuccessful query by the jockey.

Jockey Pesi Shroff rode a brilliant race on Rashid Bryamji trained Silvertre, conserving the horse for the final dash in the Badami Cup (Div I). The well-bred Silvertre who was perhaps a little underdone, nevertheless proved too good for Different Ballgame who chased the winner in vain. The price drift on Silvertre did cause alarms as to the fitness of the favourite as Darius Byramji ward Different Ballgame came in for spirited support but the daughter of Queen To Conquer quickly dispelled any doubts with a resolute win. Angeles finished on purposefully from the rear to take the third spot. The lower division of the race saw Appu retain his composure and balance when steering favourite Go Honey Go to victory. Go Honey Go who was well clear of the field, suddenly shied away inside the final furlong, very nearly throwing the jockey off the saddle. Go Honey Go again did the same closer to the winning post but despite these alarms, Appu remained in the saddle when finishing two lengths ahead of Butter Sponge. Apprentice jockey Rajesh Singh failed to position Butter Sponge in a favourable position and he was left to cover a lot of leeway on the front-runner. He did well to bridge the gap considerably but Butter Sponge will be better over a slightly extended trip.

The odds on Star Treasure drifted out alarmingly in the Pendragon Plate (Div I), with Crow Wood receiving inspired support. Crow Wood went on a successful start to finish mission while Star Treasure cut an erratic course, shifting in violently from outside to the rails and then was hanging badly when finishing a poor second. The well-bred Arrival who finished third, should be seen in different light when raced over an extended trip. The lower division of the race saw favourite Amber Windsor win comfortably from Sea Legend.

Padmanabhan trained Arcaro who had run in good company when being used as a pacemaker in the classics, looked outstanding in the Flirting Vision Plate (Div II) but with Trillennium coming in for support, the son of Green Forest ran at good odds. In the event, Arcaro justified the support but the threat for his supremacy did not come from Trillennium but from long shot Cool Tempo who finished a close second. The upper division of the race saw favourite Rio once again let down. Altosax, who had finished way behind Rio in his last outing, was seen in different light, staving off the challenge of Starjo with a measure of comfort.

Trainer Ganapathy had a profitable treble for the day as apart from Amber Windsor and Bold Chieftan, he had another winner through Rainbow Velvet who recorded an encore against a poor quality of opposition. Black Ocean was second while Kilkemny edged out Semoran for the third spot. Samanzar who had a useful outing, is the one for the notebook.
