Priceless proves too good

By Sharan Kumar | 15 Jun 2002 | BANGALORE

Priceless (B.Prakash up), winner of the Fillies Trial Stakes (Grade I) being led in by trainer S.Ganapathy and owner M.A.M.Ramaswamy

The Gr 1 Fillies Trial Stakes proved a no contest. Priceless hammered the opposition in great style. The fact that she was the highest rated filly in the fray was reason enough to make her the firm favourite to win. Her easy win was even more facilitated by one of the handlers who held Free Radical so tightly at the start that the filly lost all her chances at the gate itself. French jockey Chris Lemaire who came specially to ride the daughter of Diffident, officially lodged a complaint about the handler for preventing the filly from jumping out but the Stewards who looked into the matter, perhaps did not want to rake a controversy and treated the matter as closed, blaming lack of communication as the season for the mishap. Later, the incident did not even find a mention in the race day incidents!

he daughter of Placerville has proved to be a money-spinner. Winner of the Gr 1 Poonawalla Multi-Million, Priceless was settled a handy third or fourth as Prevalence did the job of running in the front. Jockey M R Singh repeatedly looked back from the 800-metre marker onwards to look for stablemate Priceless to ensure that the favourite did not have a troubled passage and moved out rounding the final bend. This obviously was not required because Priceless did not need such help to assert herself, which she did, bursting clear inside the final 300 metres to win in great style over Ching Mai who staved off the challenge of Free Radical for the runner-up berth. M R Singh was fined Rs 2000 for repeatedly looking back in search of the stablemate but the Stipes thought that he was looking back ``for no apparent reason!’’ At least that was the official reason for the fine. Lemaire failed to get Free Radical going, trying to get a position along the rails and in the process, getting pushed about.

Priceless has proved invincible over trips up to a mile. She will be tested to the hilt should her connections race her in the Kingfisher Derby.

Pesi Shroff rode a brilliant race on Appeaser to steer the son of Twist And Turn to an impressive win in the 1400 metres Dharmaprakash L S Venkaji Rao Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 40 and above, the supporting event of the day. Appeaser has proved his mettle over staying trips and his performance over seven furlongs indeed came as a surprise. Full credit should go to Shroff who got Appeaser to stretch out by racing him free from traffic hurdles on the wide outside and had the top-weight in full steam on turning for home. Appeaser moved up with giant strides to win with a measure of comfort from Spark of Life. Spark of Life, a habitual front-runner, was ridden poorly by apprentice jockey J Chinoy who failed to position his mount to advantage, lost places and was in fact, in the rear of the field inside the final 300 metres. The five-year old son of Rebounding Thrill, Spark of Life put in a game performance to finish second ahead of Whatmore who should put this forward running effort to advantage next time out.

Nothing seems to be going right for Dominic who just managed to lead in one winner among the several fancied runners over the week. Tal just about got up in time to edge out the front-running Rhythm ‘N Blues in the day’s opener but in the very next race, highly rated Cold Fire bit the dust, finishing a tame second. Dare You See did all the front running but was done in by the finishing burst of Airworthy who won at nourishing odds.

Allspange had the measure of Society Dream (Prakash up) with a measure of comfort but jockey Prakash managed to end the day with a double as apart from Priceless, he rode Astrocharm to a resolute win in the concluding race of the day. A coup was brought off on Misty Charms in the Diablo Plate (Div I) who won at nourishing odds at the expense of a late-finishing Persian Goddess.
