Noble Executive proves a point or two

By Sharan Kumar | 30 Jun 2002 | BANGALORE

Noble Executive (M.A.Gallagher up), winner of the Juvenile Sprinters Million (Grade III) being led in by trainer S.Ganapathy and owner M.A.M.Ramaswamy

Ganapathy trained Noble Executive won the Gr 2 Juvenile Sprinters Million with ease which came as surprise to most but not to this writer who had pointed out in the past that the defeat of the son of Placerville in his first run during the season had to be taken with a pinch of salt and that without doubt the three-year old gelding belonged to the highest class. Subsequently, Noble Executive was used as a pacemaker in the Colts Trial Stakes where he set a scorching pace for stablemate Superior Force and yet lasted out to place fourth. Noble Executive was allowed to run at lucrative odds as stable’s retained jockey Prakash chose to ride less heralded Name And Fame, confusing the punters in the process who blindly plumped for the accomplished Mumbai challenger Premier Classe. In the event, Noble Executive floored them all with a start to finish dash, with the only semblance of a challenge coming from stablemate Name And Fame. Castle Park did not have the fitness to the required level as the daughter of Diffident, after being interfered with by Name And Fame in the early part of the race, was struggling to cover up the leeway. Premier Classe faded out of the reckoning when she came under pressure rounding the final bend.

The victory of Noble Executive was well merited. The fact that the gelding had immense potential was borne out by the brilliant win recorded over sprint in the final phase of the winter season. But Noble Executive mysteriously failed and lost out to an inferior opposition in his first run during the season. Now that Noble Executive has come and won, this writer stands vindicated.

Ganapathy’s other ward Star Strider, half brother to Indian Derby winner Starsky, defied a huge penalty when winning the 1800 metres Hampi Cup in impressive fashion. Star Strider who was set to carry the postage stamp weight of 47 kgs, quickened well on turning for home and won well. However, he did not beat anything of note and as such, one cannot be too excited about his prospects in the forthcoming Derby where he is likely to run. The handicapper too was perhaps not carried away when he put him up by mere 7.5 points which was the same received by stablemate Name And Fame for finishing second in the Juvenile Million.

Pesi Shroff drove out Sea Legend to an emphatic victory in the 1400 metres Romantic Dancer Plate, a race for maiden three-year olds. The son of Warrshan, Sea Legend who had stripped fit with the benefit of a run, out sprinted the rest, dictating the pace from the word `go’. It’s A Steal who came in for spirited betting, found the lack of a race run going against her. Dil Maangemore who ran a little green, had a good educative run and was full of running when finishing an eye-catching third. Dil Maangemore will be too good to miss next time out over an identical distance or over a slightly extended trip.

Puttanna who was back in action after month and half’s hiatus, saddled a well backed winner through Tribal Dance who despite a long lay off and a interfered passage, finished on strongly to get the nod in the last stride over the front-running Diamonds Galore. Broken Silence was putting in good work too late to be of use though he did figure in the photo. The lower division of the race went the way of Dance Royale who edged out Semoran close home. Semoran who has been a big let down thus far, is slowly picking up form and should strike before long.

Trainer Mohan Valavi could have saddled a brace of winners but for Diamonds Galore losing by a whisker. His other ward Authentic Power easily contained the challenge of Alto. Ozone finished with a flourish to snatch the third spot by a whisker from Beau Ideal.

Mrs Silva Storai drove out Triple King to a thrilling win over Star of Heaven in the 1200 metres M Ali Asker Memorial Plate (Div I). She could have been seen in similar vein in the lower division of the race but she chose to take it easy on Whitehall where Patriotic Pride won at nourishing odds over a late-finishing Dover. Favorite Starjo ran below known form. The Stewards have opened an enquiry into the running and riding of Whitehall.

Trainer Darashah had a strongly fancied winner through Saladin who prevailed over Balalaika in the battle of attrition. Balalaika led the field into the straight and put up a stiff resistance but Appu was able to pull out that bit extra from the well-bred Saladin who got strong close home.
