Doi Moi Comes Good With Ease

By Mahendra Mallya | 27 Jan 2011 | MUMBAI

Trainer Nosher Cama leading Doi Moi (Neeraj RAwal Up), winner of The General Obaidullah Khan Trophy

Doi Moi (Royal Kingdom - Count The Stars) lived up to his pre-race expectations and scored a relatively easy victory even though the margin may seem contrary. Jockey Neeraj Rawal rode a patient race and his patience bore fruit long before the business end. Sitting fourth of four and a couple of lengths away from the threesome that were closely huddled until the straight, Doi Moi shifted gears soon on turning for home. Fire Vault, who had led them in, struggled to hold on and gave way to Doi Moi rather tamely. Sea Shower, who was right up, failed to measure up despite Richard Hughes trying his best. Sea Shower had thrown in the towel long before the distance post. Living The Dream simply could not produce anything worthwhile and ended a far away last.

Doi Moi assumed command and was travelling well past the distance post. Fire Vault was the only one in his vicinity and Neeraj had him covered too. However, in the final 100 metres or so, Fire Vault did give a glimpse of something still left in him, but Doi Moi kicked on regardless. Fire Vault needs watching next time out over similar distance.

On a day when form horses obliged in most races, trainers Narendra Lagad and Rehanullah Khan sent out two heavily fancied horses each. While Naren had Emerald Queen and Greatness winning from his strables, Rehan led in Fantastic and Guns N Roses.

Emerald Queen (Emerald Cat - Kiss And Tell) scored her first victory in her 11th start in a close call with Arabian Power and Secret Talk. The three dominated the stretch-run, battling all the way. Arabian Power slipped in through the rails and engaged Secret Talk one off the fence, when nearing the distance post. Emerald Queen, racing on the centre of the track, accounted for the pair. Arabian Power could have done with some better finishing skills from the saddle. Emerald Queen pushed for home and survived the close call. Secret Talk earned some place money.

Greatness (Emerald Cat - Jungle Girl) overcame a sluggish start and made steady progress along the rails to be well in touch with the front-runners. Springbank and Be Cool were at the helm when Greatness leaped forward with telling strides in the straight. Greatness improved from the last position at 600 to be a prominent fourth entering the straight. Once jockey De Souza got the clearing he was looking for, Greatness produced quick acceleration to collar the pair of Springbank and Be Cool. It was smooth sailing for Greatness in the latter half of the straight. Be Cool fought well to peg back Springbank for the runner-up berth and both seemed to have needed the outing.

Rehan got his act together sending two well-backed horses in the third and the last race of the day. Both his wards, Fantastic (Burden Of Proof - Screen Play) and Guns N Roses (Brave Act - Striesand) were bred at the Kunigal Stud Farm.

Fantastic scored a fashionable win causing no alarm to her large following. She took the jump well and shot into the front to match strides with Paris Hilton keeping a safe distance from the rest. Hannah Montana, Sabanero and Zen were tardy at the gates. Fantastic had a slight edge over Paris Hilton on straightening up and soon powered her way to accelerate away from the rest. Midway up the straight, it was clear that Fantastic would never be caught. Hickory improved towards the finish to run second, while Paris Hilton held on to thwart the late finish of Wings Of Angels.

Guns N Roses was very well handled by jockey McCullagh who was unperturbed way behind the crowded front bunch. C'est La Vie too was not prominent initially and made her move in the straight. Michele Marieci shot into the lead soon on turning for home after a brief tussle with leader Scintillating Star. Before she could pull away too far, C'est La Vie put is short burst but failed to sustain that long enough. Guns N Roses appeared on the scene in the latter half of the straight and easily sailed past the duo to post a convincing victory.

Richard Hughes won just one of his three rides and that was the least fancied of the three. Ocean Girl (Diffident - Girl Form Ipanema) squeezed through the rails and Emerald Valley made his bid from the outside and both started to apply themselves to cut down the sizable lead Rhythm Divine had built coming into the straight. Rhythm Divine kept going well until the distance post but was clearly fighting to survive. Ocean Girl, under some strong handling from Richard, wore down Rhythm Divine but the new threat had come from Emerald Valley coming alongside with Mulrennan astride. They pair fought out the final furlong and Richard proved a better finisher than Mulrennan. Walk Of Life ended a decent third and had a good outing preparing for a slightly longer trip. Rhythm Divine squandered a huge lead while Mistral was seen finishing on, just one off the fence.

Cool Cat (Emerald Cat - Hope) made an impact on debut to win The Mount Everest Trophy Div II. Spurting readily to the front, Rajendra nursed the Imtiaz filly to a nice tempo to lead the pack home. Mountain Fairy, though prominent in vicinity, just wouldn't quicken and warmed when all was lost. Afsoon tried hard to get the measure of Cool Cat. The driving force behind Cool Cat, jockey Rajendra, never let his filly relax and egged her on to make her debut a memorable one.

Hunter Bay (Brave Hunter - Temple Bay) was one the most impressive winners of the day and Smokin Aces should take solace in that fact. As the field was dispatched, Smokin Aces did well to hit the front and led a clustered bunch into the straight. Hunter Bay was in the mid-bunch and made gradual progress to be in the right place to make his final charge. Smokin Aces ran a good race in a long time and hung on fighting as long as he could. Hunter Bay produced a blinding gallop starting midway down the straight and his victory was never in doubt once he joined Smokin Aces past the distance post. Red Tabasco, though slowly out, did well to recover and grab a place in the frame. Always Smile kicked on to end third just ahead of the fast finishing Red Tabasco. Smokin Aces looked good and but for that terrific gallop from Hunter Bay, he would have shown a better result. Smokin Aces is one to note in his next outing.

Gatravat (Barood – Back From Heaven), trained by Robert D'Mellow, came alive with a spirited last-furlong run to get past Arabian Rock whose lead looked insurmountable at the distance post. Working up a steady pace, Gatravat inched closer with every stride and in the final finish Mulrennan got the gelding to surge all out just in time to get past Arabian Rock close home. Green Signal, the favourite, ended a tame third. Kite Runner lost all her chances as she was slowly off, yet made a bold bid to fight her way to the frame.

Gauri (Ikhtyar - Kojagiri) won as expected in a 'family' field. Three of the four runners came from the Jodha stables in this all-female affiar. Sitting last of four, Gauri put in an assertive gallop in the homestretch to sail past Honey Bee and romp home to an easy victory.
