Caribbean Queen Reigns Supreme

By Mahendra Mallya | 27 Feb 2011 | MUMBAI

Mr. Zeyn Mirza & trainer P Shroff leading Caribbean Queen (C Ruzaan Up), winner of The Serum Institute of Indian Trophy

Caribbean Queen (Steinbeck – Dazzling Queen) with Ruzaan on board continued her good form and latched on to her early advantage to stave off a serious challenge from the much improved Rajasthan Royals to stretch her tally to three wins from four starts this season. This one was a better effort as she took on horses from the higher class after she went down rather tamely to Ancient Wonder in her last outing.

Sitting well up chasing Highland Flame soon on start, Caribbean Queen stepped up momentum coming into the straight. Superior Quest could never capitalise after galloping alongside Caribbean Queen until they straightened up for home. He simply bowed out of contention early in the straight. Caribbean Queen, however, charged towards Highland Flame who was never too keen to surrender his lead. Ruzaan wore the leader down approaching the distance post and took charge with just over a furlong to go. Ruzaan, however, had to be persistent with her as Rajasthan Royals appeared to be gaining on them. Both, jockeys Ruzaan and Srinath fought hard, but Caribbean Queen managed to hold a slight upper-hand and prevailed by just one length to pick up the Serum Institute of India Trophy clocking a smart timing of 1:10.72 seconds. Silver Sands, who lost some ground at the start, showed progress in the straight. His start, however, proved his undoing. He is a ‘must watch’ soon in a slightly friendlier company.

Harlamoff (Glory Of Dancer – Winning Spurs) scored a glorious victory in the Melbourne Spring Festival Cup in a most convincing fashion. Carrying a heavy impost of 61.5 kilos, jockey Prakash kept Harlamoff just a couple of lengths from the lead. Ashwa Prayag was in charge early on and at 800, Arabian Rock took over. Harlamoff shot ahead soon on entering the straight, and once in the lead, looked well in command. Dancing Dame, who had the winner well covered until the turn, failed to quicken and did just enough to run a tame third. Eye Of The Storm progressed in the straight to keep his consistency and ended a decent second.

Race for The Intervalve (India) Ltd Trophy was flagged off from the new starting gates imported from Australia which was inaugurated ceremoniously just before the race. Fire Vault led the field all the way into the straight and went at a decent pace. However, he meekly surrendered when Frost Fairy, who was one behind him for most of the journey, made headway past the 400. Lionwoods and Lunar Quest worked hard to raise themselves but neither was making any serious progress. Solor (Glory Of Dancer – Steadfast Love) warmed up soon past the 300 and Pasquier eased Solor past Frost Fairy. Solor galloped strongly and full of steam to draw away to score an impressive victory.

The Race of Hope Trophy was in recognition of the noble efforts of the Indian Cancer Society which looks after the welfare of those struck by the dreaded decease. The RWITC and the Poonawallas had planned a donation drive to raise funds for the organisation. The Race of Hope Trophy was run to mark this drive. Al Zamarud (Emerald Cat – Cristina) won it untroubled from start to finish. Hitting the front readily as soon as the field was despatched, Al Zamarud maintained a good lead coming into the straight. Xenia, who was the closest to the leader, could not raise her momentum and struggled to keep up. In the straight, Al Zamarud stretched out nicely to step up pace and past the distance post sealed the fate of the opponents and won clean as a whistle. Fairy Queen ran on to finish second ahead of Stormica. Xenia kept a place in the frame.

The Rusi Patel Trophy saw trainer Imtiaz Sait finish one-two with Belligerent (Glory Of Dancer – Buona Sera) producing an electrifying finish that shocked her rivals to submission. Sitting fourth behind Scionic, Snowden and Angelo, Belligerent gathered a fiery momentum and burst into the lead well into the straight and simply carted away from the rest. Belligerent, who has been consistent all through, lifted herself another level to win her third race this season, compiling a three-in-a-row. Imtiaz has done well with the mare to have not only maintained her form but help guide her to improve with each run particularly this season. Three of her six career victories have come this season! Misschevious Trot ran on from behind to grab the runner-up slot from Scionic and White Knight.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Trophy looked an open affair despite Tender Romance being installed the clear favourite. This fact was further established when the heads turned for home, with Guns N Roses, Star Of Roses, Tender Romance and Starrer turned for home alongside each other. The fight for supremacy got to a boiling point in the early half of the straight, but past the distance post, Star Of Roses (China Visit – Blue Ridge) had a clear upper hand and Richard Hughes never relented as he guided Star Of Roses to a comfortable victory. Tender Romance, Starrer and Guns N Roses followed in close order.

Devilitto (Black Cash – Zografi) won the first race of the day in a comfortable manner. There was a bit of jostling at the start during which Pure Devotion (Vikram Jodha) was hampered by Devilitto keen to get to the front. This inward move resulted in Pure Devotion clipping and dislodging the jockey. Vikram, fortunately, did not injure himself and fulfilled his other engagements on the day.

Devilitto took charge from the leader Lady Black Star soon on entering the straight and galloped away from the rest with gay abandon. Soon he had established a two something lead. He looked to be heading for a comprehensive victory, but nearing the winning post, he slowed down a touch. Fortunately, he had the safety of his handy lead which held in good stead and Devilitto managed to stay ahead to win from Victor Ivanov and Lady Black Star. It was later announced that Devilitto had broken a blood vessel.

Caramel (Warrshan – Peperoni) came alive with a scintillating finish that out-classed her rivals at precisely the right time when her connections had backed her with conviction. The burden of bet seemed to have motivated the mare and not one to squander any advantage, Caramel provided yet another successful coup on the track. She was settled well close up-front where Tag Along Tommy and Towering High were disputing the early lead until they turned for home. Caramel then, steadily gained on the pair and soon went sailing clear. There was no doubting her progress to victory, and Caramel duly obliged without any anxious moments to her connections. Fluent Victory came from way behind to finish an eye-catching second.
