Trainer P Shroff leading Camacho (S Zervan Up), winner of The Radha Sigtia Trophy

Pesi Shroff strengthened his stranglehold on the trainers’ Championship for the season sending out a fine treble on Thursday that included both the trophy races of the day. He is way ahead in the tally logging in 46 winners to date exactly twice that of second placed Narendra Lagad who is on 23.

Pesi Shroff had declared three from his stables and all of them won their respective races without anxiety and each of them were heavily fancied. Camacho (Razeen – Gourgandine) won the Radha Sigtia trophy without encountering any resistance from his three rivals. Fire Vault led the small field and went about setting a friendly pace. Camacho raced a couple of lengths behind with Solor and Go Guzzi Go following within about four lengths. The race picked up momentum well past the 1000 m marker and when Camacho joined the leader taking the turn, the race was well over.

Camacho stormed ahead early into the straight and bounded forward opening up a comfortable lead without being extended and marched on ahead to post a very easy victory. Solor improved to run second with Fire Vault gaining something back after dropping to be last of four in the final furlong. The only thing that left something to be desired in Camacho’s victory was the timing. He clocked well over 2: 34 but would have done much better had the early pace been a true one.

Batista (Glory of Dancer – Kilshannig) showed no signs of fatigue after running some gruelling races which should have taken a toll on him. In his own company and over the shorter distance, he returned with all guns blazing notching up a fashionable victory to make his statement. Taking charge from Ocean Emperor at the bend, Batista left nothing to chance and Malcolm Kharadi patiently nursed him further away towards the business end of the race. Royal Highness just could not measure up to this fabulous performance and was spent even as they approached the distance post. Persian Lily did well to end runner-up while Generalissimo came from behind to pick up the place money.

Shahenshah (Black Cash – Zenana) showed a scorching turn of foot and romped home to an inspiring victory clocking a decent timing of 1:23.76 for the seven-furlong race. Sitting up in front with Afsoon initially, Shahenshah powered his way into the straight and then unleashed a speedy gallop to win without breaking into sweat. Soneeyo improved along the rails to beat the rest and this run should help him strip fitter. Lake Geneva warmed up late but could only do enough to wrest the place money from Marauder.

Trainer Hormuz Antia has hit a purple patch and has been leading in winners consistently of late. Thursday too proved to be a money spinning day for the professional with two from his stables cornering glory on the day. Lady Black Star (Bee’s Prospector – Romantic Affair) started the day well for Antia with a facile victory in the day’s opening race. Tailing Auraria until the turn, Lady Black Star charged ahead past the 400 and worked on the handy lead to keep a safe distance from her rivals all the way home. Rajdoot and King’s Troop tried hard to match strides but could make no impact on the winner. Bemisaal and Inner Harmony were in the front bunch but could not capitalize in the straight. Double Delite was the one who improved steadily to edge out King’s Troop for the third spot.

Sea Bucaneer (Royal Kingdom – Eau De Vie) ran true to form and made amends for his last start loss. Tailing Doctor No soon on start, Sea Bucaneer surged to the lead soon on turning for home. Apprentice MA Roushan then began to work his way to stay ahead as there seemed a strong challenge mounting not too far behind. Hottie showed some momentum and even looked threatening for a while, but failed to sustain. Sterling Silver too was fighting hard but it was her stablemate Silver Screen who was the fastest of the beaten lot who made Sea Bucaneer earn the victory by going all the way at full steam. Silver Screen covered a lot of ground and briskly at that, prompting me to suggest keeping an eye on him the next time out.

Sexy Eyes (Major Impact – Saraceno) with Akash Agarwal followed up her last start victory with another sensational one, this time accounting for favourite Star Treasure. Hitting the front soon on start, Sexy Eyes made her own pace and sustained well all through to the winning post. Star Treasure tried hard and was all out in the final furlong, but Akash Agarwal ensured that Sexy Eyes kept going under his able guidance and managed to ward-off a serious challenge from the favourite to scamper home by a narrow margin. Glowing Star did look prominent for a while in the homestretch, but was overwhelmed.

Aqualina (Major Impact – Latino) humbled hot favourite Viva La Diva with ridiculous ease. There was a hustle for the early lead as Wild Imagination, Viva La Diva, Mypethoney and Aqualina were all jumbled up together for the early initiative. Viva La Diva came in home first, but was soon passed by Aqualina. Once in the lead, Aqualina sailed ahead and galloped resolutely to shut out any possible challenge. There was none, as Aqualina worked up a fantastic momentum winning it drawing away from her opponents. Orito, the owner mate of the winner, made a late dash to finish a noteworthy second, coming from a long way back to beat all but the winner. Wild Imagination held on to the third spot. Aqualina, in this form, could well pick up another race as could Orito.

Loyal Tycoon (Glory Of Dancer – Little Pleasure) pulled off his second victory of the season with a sustained gallop in the straight to win well warding off a late challenge from Siooux Chief. Blau Himmel led the field at start and when they turned for home, he was finding it hard to keep up. However, he did well to stay stubbornly in front until the distance post. Master Craft too was looking to make his presence felt but once Loyal Tycoon started to quicken, there was no doubt who would win. Loyal Tycoon looked menacing at the distance post and he shot ahead soon thereafter to pull away. In the last fifty or so, Siooux Chief came with a brilliant finishing effort but was a touch too late. Victor Ivanov ran on under pressure to finish a tame fourth.

Devil In Disguise (Royal Kingdom – Limelite) turned up late on the scene but had enough fire power to carve out an impressive victory. The Faisal Abbas-trainee had a lot to cover as Fallen Angel had a runaway lead coming into the straight. Cougar, the favourite, was in second, but could not quicken and lost the plot early in the straight. The ones who looked prominent were Laurus Pride and Insite Soul. Past the distance post, Fallen Angel still had a handy lead, but in a flash all was over when Devil In Disguise, as if possessed, burst on the scene with a devastating finish. He shot ahead of Fallen Angel and romped home to an authoritative victory.

For the professionals, besides Pesi Shroff, apprentice jockeys Akash Agarwal and MA Roushan scored a double each.
