Wet blanket on Calcutta Derby

After all the build-up that the Eveready Calcutta Derby Stakes received, with the prospect of one of the greatest match races between the filly In The Spot Light and the local champion colt Dandified, it failed to take off as per schedule due to overnight rain having rendered the underfoot conditions unsuitable for ‘true-to-form’ racing.
Although the volume of rain was not that much, the stipendiary stewards and clerk of the course were of the opinion that by the time the Derby would be run, the track along the railing side would have been cut up and the Derby runners would have to travel wide. Former champion jockey Richard Alford agreed with the decision of the Stewards as he felt that the jockeys would not want to endanger themselves or their mounts.
Punters will have to wait till Sunday, January 15 for the Derby to be held. Though the same acceptances will hold good, fresh declarations for jockeys and draws will be conducted. Thus, we have a weekend of racing ahead as The Police Commissioner’s Trophy will be run on Saturday, January 14. The Stewards have cancelled the races scheduled for Tuesday January 17. The Stewards have also confirmed that entry badges for January 8 will be valid for the Derby on January 15.
